"What? Why?" I asked quickly.

"I'd just like to take some new moulds of your teeth, for if you end up getting your braces again. It'll help me understand what I need to do rather than just examining your teeth with a mirror."

"Did Sam ask you to do this?" I asked, blurting out exactly what jumped into my mind.

"Errrr... not exactly" he began. "Well... Sam still wants you to get braces again, as you probably know... but I thought that errrrmm... that since I'll be doing it... I'd start from the beginning like all my patients, with like an errr... an orthodontic examination and stuff like that." Throughout the whole explanation Adam seemed very awkward, it was quite funny really.

"Errrr... well Adam you see..." I began. "I actually have a toothache right now, so maybe now's not the best time."

"Oh, so that's why you have an appointment with Sam later!" he exclaimed, sitting down in the big chair and crossing his arms, looking very relaxed. I nodded my head. "Well, maybe another time then, I guess." I shrugged my shoulders at him, not really wanting to ever have those horrible moulds again, as well as an orthodontic examination, whatever that consisted of! I'd never had one of those from Sam before!

"I should probably go" I said, feeling a little bit awkward. "You probably have patients anyway."

"No, no" Adam answered. "Lola was my last patient of the day. I just have to stick around on standby in case Sam needs any help. Hey Billy, do you want me to have a look at your teeth for you? See what's causing that toothache?" He jumped out of the big chair and gestured towards it.

I actually pondered his request for a few moments. I wondered whether it'd be better to allow Adam to do my examination and find something bad rather than Sam. Adam would probably be more kind about it, as well as more gentle. Yet, as much as I hated Sam being my dentist, I felt a lot more comfortable with him than Adam- which even I couldn't believe myself!

"Not to be rude Adam, but I'd rather Sam take a look. Sorry."

"Don't be sorry" he smiled. "I understand. Hey, I have a pack of cards in my bag! Do you want to play whilst you wait for your appointment?"

It made me feel very happy that Adam had offered to spend some time with me! I humbly agreed and we played many different card games at Adam's desk. I'd never played many card games before, so he took it upon himself to teach me some things and was very patient about it too. We played until, what seemed like ages later, Sam waltzed into the room, wearing his doctor's coat and smiling happily.

"Sorry to spoil the fun, but I'm ready for you now, Billy" he said cooly. "Thanks for keeping him entertained Adam" Sam grinned to Adam.

"No problem, I enjoyed it anyway! Good luck Billy, and Sam- let me know if I'm needed, alright?"

This made me shiver on the inside. What would Adam be needed for? I was just getting a checkup and a cleaning... right?

"Cheers Adam. Come on Billy, let's go" Sam said. I followed him into his examination room and closed the door behind me.

"Sam, I don't think I should have a checkup. I have a toothache so I don't really want you touching my teeth" I explained, trying to gain some sympathy.

"Billy, the reason I'm giving you the checkup is to find what's causing you the toothache, okay? Do you wanna take a seat for me?" Sam spoke very gently for a change and it made me feel complient. I sat down in the chair and Sam lowered it. He then pulled on a pair of gloves, positioned the overhead light and picked up a mirror and an explorer. At the sight of the explorer, instant panic ran through my body and I instantly covered my mouth with my one remaining hand.
