"Billy, are you for real right now? I've not even been back from holiday one day, and I'm already having to pick you up from school for destruction of school property? What are you playing at?" He stared into my eyes fiercely, his looked as if they were about to set on fire.
"I'm sorry Sam" I mumbled.
"There must be a reason for you punching a locker? Care to explain?" he asked me, raising one eyebrow.
I looked up at him and cleared my throat. "I was talking to Lola, and everything was going great again. I felt so happy. But, then she told me that she had to stay away from me, because her dad didn't like me. I just felt so angry Sam. Angry because I know Lola wants to spend time with me, but her dad is just in the way. She walked away from me, so I punched the locker in anger. I didn't mean to do it Sam, something just came over me. I'm sorry, I really am."
Sam went silent for a few seconds. He seemed to be thinking about his response. Yet, his eyes were no longer fierce, they had become more understanding.
"I'm glad you have explained that to me Billy. I do understand why you feel angry, I would be too. But you know you need to control your anger, yes? It's still not acceptable for you to just punch things."
He was silent for a few moments longer.
"I'm going to let this slide Billy, because I know you're not a violent person. You just need to attempt to control your emotions, okay?"I was so grateful for Sam's response. "Yes, I understand. Thank you Sam."
"Okay buddy" he smiled, as he began to drive. "You're going to spend the day at the office with me, alright?"
"What am I supposed to do?" I asked, already thinking about how bored I was going to be all day. (At least I didn't have to attend school today.)
"Well, you have your appointment at 11:30" Sam reminded me. "But, for the rest of the day, you can help around the office. Adam told me this morning how enthusiastic you seem to be about dentistry, so if you're really that interested, you won't mind helping around the office, right?"
I suddenly became very excited, yet I knew I really needed to prove myself today. If I did well, perhaps there would be more in store in the future!
"Yeah, I am very happy to help" I smiled. "What jobs do you want me to do?"
"Well today is a very busy day" Sam informed me, as we pulled into the car park of Sam's Dentist. "Both Adam and I have lots of appointments to get through. So we could do with someone to call the patients into the room, it would save a lot of time. Yet, I also think it would be good for you to work behind the reception desk with Jasmine."
These sounded like very boring jobs, but at least it was something.
Before we hopped out of the car, Sam stared down at my hand and raised an eyebrow.
"Pass me your hand" he demanded, looking annoyed.
I placed my hand into his, and he began unwrapping the bandage that the nurse had wrapped around my bleeding knuckles. I didn't question what Sam was doing, I didn't want to annoy him even more. Sam looked intently at my knuckles, then tore off the rest of the bandage.
"Your hand doesn't need to be bandaged. Sure it may hurt, but it's no longer bleeding. I don't want you working at my office looking like you've got a broken hand, okay? You'll have to suffer the pain I'm afraid."
My jaw dropped and I furrowed my eyebrows in confusion. I couldn't believe what he had just said.
"That's cruel" I snapped.
"Life is cruel unfortunately" he sighed. "Sometimes you just have to suffer the consequences of your actions, Billy."
Sam and I climbed out the car and headed inside to the office. I had to attempt to ignore what he had said to me, because this was the complete wrong place for holding grudges and anger.
