Neither Adam nor I said anything to one another. Adam simply swapped the tray of used tools for one of the new ones, then plonked himself in the dentist chair, awaiting his check up.
He looked nervous. He rubbed his face with his hands and let out a small sigh which was barely audible, obviously he was trying to hide it from me.
"Are you okay?" I quietly asked, glaring at Adam from the corner of the room.
He looked over at me with his deep eyes full of sorrow.
"I'm okay" he lied. "Well, I don't really want to admit this, but I'm kind of scared" he said afterwards.
"Why?" I asked.
"I was hoping Jasmine would be checking my teeth rather than Sam. Not that I have anything against your brother of course, but he does somewhat put me on edge."
"Sam scares you?" I asked, shocked.
"No, Sam doesn't scare me as a person. He's one of the greatest people I know. Sam just takes his work very seriously ...and... don't tell him this Billy... but honestly, I've had a toothache for the past few days and I'm almost adamant that I have a cavity. It hurts pretty bad."
"But Sam will be able to fix it for you" I replied reassuringly.
"I know he will, he's an excellent dentist. But Sam can be slightly rough sometimes, I'm sure you've realised, and that's what I'm worried about. Considering my mouth is already in a spot of pain, even more added on top of that may not be a very pleasant gift. Plus, I don't want him to be disappointed in me."
"Why would he be disappointed? It's not the end of the world" I said.
"Because obviously I'm a dentist... and an orthodontist... so I should be taking care of my teeth. And of course I do take care of my teeth, but it's happened and it's unpreventable now. I have a cavity, and it needs fixing."
"Have you had a cavity before?" I asked, inquisitively.
"Yes" Adam replied. "When I was sixteen. Sam fixed it."
This confused me. How had they known each other for all this time? Just as I was about to question Adam about this, Sam returned back into the room, looking very happy. I heard Adam whimper slightly. As cruel as it was, I had to try to contain my laughter. A grown man whimpering over a fellow dentist walking into the room was somewhat humorous.
"Right then Adam, let's see if there's any damage" Sam declared in a laughable manner.
Sam repeated what Adam had done with the chair, the light, the gloves and placing a mask over his face. He picked up a mirror and explorer from the tray and positioned them above Adam's mouth.
"Do you want to remove the mask that's below your chin?" Sam sniggered slightly.
Adam, who obviously hadn't realised it was still there, turned faintly red in the face and scrunched the mask into his pocket.
"Okay Adam, can you open up for me?" Sam asked.
Adam didn't open his mouth.
"Adam?" Sam questioned after a few seconds of waiting.
Adam whimpered again, then screwed his eyes shut tight and opened his mouth excessively wide.
"Can you raise your chin a bit please?" Sam asked. Adam ignored him, so Sam lifted Adam's chin up for him manually. "Come on Adam, I shouldn't have to be telling you stuff like this" Sam chuckled.
I watched Sam check Adam's teeth. It was also weird to see Sam with a mask covering the bottom half of his face, considering I hadn't seen him wear one in a long while. After about two minutes, Sam started frowning. Adam let out a quiet, muffled shriek, and I knew that Sam had found the cavity. He removed the mirror and explorer and pulled his mask down below his chin to talk to Adam.
