I awoke the next morning to find myself startled at my surroundings. I wasn't accustomed to waking up somewhere different. But as soon as I remembered I was at Adam's house, everything was okay again. I quickly checked social media, then got dressed into a striped T-shirt and black skinny jeans. Considering the bathroom I was using was downstairs, I decided to leave my hair until later... or just not do it at all. My curls were a wild mess, but I embraced them.
I headed downstairs without a clue where Adam was. Was he still in bed? Was he even still in the house? Everywhere was silent.
I wandered into the kitchen to find Adam sitting at the table in the kitchen reading a book. He didn't notice me enter the room, he was too engrossed in the book he was reading.

"Morning Adam" I said quietly, trying not to startle him. It didn't work.

"Oh, morning Billy" he replied, jumping out of his chair slightly. Adam placed the bookmark onto the page he'd been reading, then placed it flat onto the table. "Did you sleep well?" he asked.

"Yes thank you" I replied politely.

"Good to hear" he beamed. "Can I interest you in some breakfast? I have cereal, porridge, toast, fruit, yogurt... do you like any of those?"

"Can I please have some porridge?" I asked. I knew this would be easy to eat, considering my braces were still feeling uncomfortable.

"Of course buddy. I'll get that sorted for you now" Adam smiled as he started to make me some porridge.
I took a seat at the table and patiently waited, feeling grateful for this kind service. Once the porridge had been made, Adam placed it in front of me and handed me a spoon, to which I thanked him warmly. He took a seat opposite me.

"I spoke to Sam on the phone this morning and told him about your braces" Adam explained. "He told me to call him back once you were awake so he could have a chat with you, okay?"

I nodded my head. Even just thinking about Sam made me miss him. He wouldn't be gone for long though, and I was sure he'd be having a lovely time... with Jasmine. He chose Jasmine over me. My brother left me for his girlfriend.

After I'd finished my porridge, which took me longer than I think Adam expected it to take me, Adam washed up my bowl and passed me his phone so I could talk to Sam.

Sam: hey Billy! How are you?
Billy: I'm okay Sam
S: are you having fun at Adam's house?
B: yeah
S: good good bud. So, Adam told me you've broken a bracket or two. How did that happen?
B: a dodgeball hit me in P.E.
S: did someone throw it at you?
B: no no, I just wasn't paying attention Sam, that's all
S: does your mouth hurt?
B: yeah it does a little bit. I have a few cuts in my mouth and my braces still ache. But I will be okay Sam
S: okay buddy. Well Adam has booked you an appointment so I will fix it for you on Monday, okay?
B: I know
S: okay Billy. Remember Adam is dropping you off at school Monday morning because I will be returning home early in the morning, then need to get to work for 9:00. But I will see you at 11:30 for your appointment, okay? You'll have to walk to the office on your own
B: okay Sam
S: alright buddy. Are you sure you're okay?
B: yes I'm okay
S: okay. Remember to be good for Adam. Love you and I'll see you soon
B: love you too Sam. Bye

I hung up. I handed the phone back to Adam and sighed.

"Are you okay Billy?" Adam asked. "You seem awfully quiet this morning."

The feeling hit me. That one feeling, where someone asks if you're okay... and then suddenly you're not okay, simply because they've asked you if you're okay. I felt tears begin to fill up in my eyes for no reason. I attempted to hold them back and not show that I felt emotional. I didn't even know why I felt emotional. Adam seemed to notice.
