Draco's POV

Ever since the Lily and Remus incident yesterday, Remus hadn't shown up to any of his classes. Peter reported privately to Draco that he hadn't been heard coming into our leaving their dormitory. Sirius was completely devoid of emotion unless someone talked to him. Then he could act like his old self, but everyone knew something was wrong, even the teachers.

Lily was seen with puffy red eyes, trying to get James to talk to her.

But James and the Marauders had put all of that behind them today. They were going to teach Draco and Hermione how to become Animagi.

Well, not exactly - the potion did it all, but the boys were going to take all of the credit.

It usually would take years for someone to become an Animagus. The potion somehow (Draco still couldn't believe the Marauders had been smart enough to do something like this) sped up the process making it so that you would go through years of advancement quickly. It was painful, but well worth it to become an Animagus.

The three Marauders, honorary Marauder, and Hermione went up to the Room of Requirement.

"This is illegal. I mean, we're attempting to become Animagi without notifying the Ministry. There's a reason they keep tab on everyone who is an Animagus," Hermione fretted, listing reasons why they shouldn't be doing this. "I mean, I would love to become one, but we won't get caught, right?"

Draco rolled his eyes.

"You guys are illegal!" she gasped, not looking too surprised. She probably already knew about it.

"Yup," Peter grinned comfortingly.

"But if you don't want to become one, 'Mione..." Sirius trailed off looking at her. Hermione stuck her tongue out and Sirius laughed, draping an arm around her shoulder. As soon as Hermione shook him off, Draco saw his face fall.

He glanced around to see James, who was watching them with a sort of glassy half-smile on his face.

And Draco was surprised to see how much it hurt him to see his friends hurt.

All these circumstances did tend to change a person. No longer was he the snarky, rude boy. He was put into Gryffindor here, and he had to prove that he wasn't totally unfit for the lion house.

He caught James' eye and gave him a comforting smile. James nodded at him, his smile a smidge less false than before.

"Hermione, Draco, this will hurt," Peter warned. He seemed to be doing most of the talking with Sirius and James out of it, and Remus not here. "It will really hurt."

They both nodded, rolling up their sleeves.

"Say, 'Devenir mon esprit animal," James enunciated and held out the vials of the potion. He smiled widely at them, but everyone noticed how weak and fake it was.

"Ladies first!" Draco smirked at Hermione, who glared playfully at him.

"Chicken!" She took the vial with no hesitation at all

Hermione held the vial carefully and pointed her wand at it. "Devenir mon espirit animal," she said, perfectly copying James' words.

The vial shimmered with  a strange red light, before settling down into a light purple solution.

The boys stared with shock at her success. The Marauders had never seen their spell enacted, and Draco was just plain shocked that it even worked.

"Of course it worked," Sirius murmured. "I mean, we made it."

Hermione grinned, then nervously uncorked the vial. "Here goes nothing," she muttered, and downed the contents.
