Harry's POV
Professor Umbridge was his favorite teacher.
Well, maybe not. But how had Harry had ever thought that she would be bad?
Being a first year in her class was great. Everything they did in her class was either a game or free time. After all, who needed defense against dark arts?
What dark arts?
All they did in History of Magic was learn about goblin wars. There had never been a wizarding war in the entire history of the world.
So, therefore, no dark arts.
It was finally winter break, and Harry, Hermione, and Draco would all spend it at the Potter's warm house.
"HARRY POTTER!" James screamed, waving a hastily drawn sign. "IS THERE ANYONE BY THE NAME OF - "
Lily silenced him. "James, you're embarrassing him! He obviously wants to impress some girl - "
Harry ran in between them. "WELL! My parents!"
Hermione and Draco chuckled, accustomed to the good-natured bantering of the Potters.
Narcissa Malfoy hadn't bothered to show up, knowing she would see Draco. Plus, the press, for some reason, didn't seem to like her.
No one ever said why, though.
Hermione's parents were all too glad to have someone else help Hermione navigate the unfamiliar world.
James grabbed the luggage and winked at them. He jumped up dramatically and apparted in mid-air.
Lily rolled her eyes at his foolishness. "He'll get splinched one day," she muttered.
She eyed the three kids. "Hold each others hands."
"Erm."
"Sure!"
"Of course, Mrs. Potter."
They gingerly gripped each others hands, then Harry and Draco clasped Lily's hand.
Pop!
Harry doubled over. He had never gotten used to Apparation.
James plopped down onto a couch. "So, tell me all about your Defense class. You learning Incendio yet? Best spell ever. Or Levicorpus! Bombarda, maybe?"
Harry stared at him. "What are those?"
Lily sighed. "They're first years, James, you idiot. Have you guys learned Expelliarmus?"
Hermione straightened up. "Are those spells designed to hurt others?"
James looked taken-aback. "That's what Defense is about, no?"
"Of course not! Professor Umbridge wouldn't teach us those. Who would need them?" Harry interjected, surprised at his parent's apparent lack of knowledge about the history.
James' POV
"Harry, we were in a war. We needed them." James looked uncomfortable. Harry had grown up hearing all about his parent's exploits in the war.
What happened?
"There has never been a war, ever!" Hermione said.
Lily was concerned now. James could see it in the way she leaned forward a bit, her posture rigid. "Hermione, who told you this?"
"Professor Umbridge. She's a genius about history. She tells us all about how all wizards are kind and equal. She's quoted Diggs on us before; 'We hold these truths to be self-evident that all wizards are created equal.' That's one of the many reasons I love the magical world,"Hermione sighed nostalgically.
