Draco's POV

If Draco wasn't a disgrace to his Slytherin pureblood family before, he definitely was now.  After befriending a Muggle, who turned out to be a Muggleborn, but still, he was nearly branded as a blood traitor.

Now, he was a Gryffindor. A Malfoy, becoming a Gryffindor. Unheard of.

Draco didn't know much about their history, but he knew that some heroes had defeated Voldemort, and his family was aiding the Dark Side.

Everyone who went bad came from Slytherin.

But not everyone who was Slytherin went bad.

As much as Narcissa tried to hide it, the pureblood values that had been engrained in her since she was little were hard habits to overcome. Draco knew she would be disappointed in him. So would his father, but he couldn't do much from Azkaban.

Draco was brought back to reality by the sound of one person clapping.

"Yay! Go Draco!" Hermione's voice sounded clearly across the silent room.

Draco lifted off the hat with shaking hands. Yes, he had wished for Gryffindor; shouldn't he be happy? But something inside him knew that a Malfoy would never be accepted as a lion. It just wasn't right.

Draco stumbled his way to the Gryffindor table. He watched as his uniform magically shimmered and created the Gryffindor emblem on his robes.

Hermione watched him curiously as half-hearted applause started to be heard.

"Blood traitor," a Slytherin hissed from across the room.

Harry glared at the first year who had spoken and moved to make space for Draco.

Hermione stared anxiously at Draco. "I think we need to catch up on our history," Hermione muttered, her face paling for some reason.

They all sat in an awkward silence until the last person was called

"Zabini, Blaise!"

"Slytherin!"

"Hermione, I don't know how much you know about our history, but people like Zabini's father - " Draco started to say in a low murmur to Hermione.

Just then, Dumbledore stood up.

"Welcome," he said. "Welcome to a new year at Hogwarts! Before we begin our banquet, I would like to say a few words. And here they are: Nitwit! Blubber! Oddment! Tweak! Thank you!"

Hermione looked at him uncertainly. "He's mad!"

Harry shook his head. "Genius, our headmaster. But he's rather... eccentric."

Suddenly, the empty plates in front of them filled up. The hall immediately rang out with hushed whispers, with many people pointing at the trio.

"Harry Potter - "

"Draco Malfoy - "

"How strange - "

"I find it shameful!"

"Potter must be brainwashed."

"The Malfoys were horrible people!"

Hermione didn't touch any of her food. Instead, she pulled out her history textbook.

George Weasley stared at her in astonishment. "Oi, we have a smart one, mate!"

Fred Weasley grinned down at her. "Thank Merlin! Gryffindor needs all the points we can get."
