Draco's POV

Draco's breath caught in his throat as he heard Hermione's confession. He barely dared to breathe as she stared at him, silently begging him to say something.

"The Hat wouldn't do that," was the first thing that came to Draco's mind, and he blurted it out. "I mean," he tried to cover up his mistake. "It wouldn't set a Muggleborn in Slytherin. Even if it thought it was the best place for you, you would've been slaughtered there."

Hermione's face made it clear that he wasn't making it any better.

Draco shifted uncomfortably. "How'd you get into Gryffindor, then?"

"I asked for Ravenclaw," Hermione seemed lost in her memories. "But the Hat and I realized at the same time that it wasn't the right place for me."

"Because you're a lot more than books and cleverness," Draco smiled, taking her hand. "And no one cares what house you were in, or what house you might've been in. All that matters is that you're Hermione Granger, brightest witch of her age, and she's going to save the world soon."

Hermione flung her arms around Draco. "I don't know what I'd do without you."

"You'd be dating Weasley," Draco said, disgust evident in his tone.

"Thank Merlin for you then, huh?" Draco pulled Hermione up and they started walking down the hallway back to the common rooms. "Well, but Ron isn't really that bad. He can be a little annoying and he eats with the manners of a walrus and he has the emotional range of a teaspoon but - "

Draco interrupted her. "I'm going to be the first to say that the Ron in our first time period was slightly better than this Ron, but he's still a bloody piece of - "

"Don't finish that," Hermione warned him.

Draco clamped his mouth shut, with a smile threatening to break through.

They had nearly made it to the common rooms when Draco stopped suddenly, his face pulling into a frown. "Hermione," he whispered, checking around to see if there were any other students. "I just thought - remember the recipe for making the counter spell to the pill?"

Hermione nodded - they all knew she had it memorized.

"It needs to be watched over constantly," Draco said. "Every two hours. But if we miss classes, someone's bound to be suspicious. Since we have the same classes, we have the same free period. So we can check on it all through the night - but then classes at start at 8:00, we don't have a free period till 2. We can check during lunch at 12:00, and then 2:00, and right after classes. But what about when the potion needs checking at 10:00?"

"We can just sneak out of class," Hermione suggested uncomfortably. "I mean - "

"Every day, the two of us excusing ourselves at that exact time?" Draco pointed out. "For how many days?"

"Six," Hermione replied immediately. "Harry could - "

"This isn't going to work," Draco sighed, kicking the wall.

"What if - what if someone else - I mean, not from our trio could attend to it at 10:00?" Hermione spoke up very quietly. "Hufflepuff and Ravenclaw have their free period right then."

"We don't know anyone from those houses," Draco frustratedly said.

Hermione stayed lost in thought while Draco continued kicking at the wall.

Hermione's POV

She did know somebody from Ravenclaw; she had met him less than an hour ago, and she didn't even know if he was trustworthy - but it was worth a short.
