Taking in a shaky breath I looked at Raven and felt my eyes water up as I saw all of the tubes and wires that she was hooked up to that were keeping her alive. Her skin was whiter than the sheets that covered her small frail body. Her black hair and red scars were the only color that she had to her body. It was the only color in the entire room.

Feeling my bottom lip quiver I held Jace tighter to my chest feeling like a bad mother and friend. Hearing a knock I turned to the nurse who was standing at the door.

“Excuse me, but there are five men here to see Raven. Should I let them in?” Glancing at the nurse she pointed at the men outside of the room. Following her I could see the five of them clad in black standing and pacing.

“Are you Lisa?” The tallest one asked. His hair was brown and short but I knew it was the one I had called from the pictures on Raven’s phone. He and the one in the pictures had the same shade of blue eyes. The nurse left as it seemed everything seemed to get sorted out.

“Yes,” I breathed, trying to not cry. Jace rested his head against my neck as if he was trying to give me his strength. “Are you Andy?”

“Yeah, wha-what happened?” Andy asked. I took a deep breath as I sat down on one of the chairs.

“I don’t know,” I started as they sat around me, “Two nights ago we were watching movies and she spent the night at my place. We fell asleep and the next morning I was in my kitchen cooking breakfast when my son started screaming. He’s never screamed before so I raced to my room and found him screaming and crying next to Raven. I touched Raven to wake her up and, and she was ice cold even though there was a blanket covering the two of them. I kept shaking her and saying her name but she wouldn’t move or wake. It wasn’t until I checked her pulse did I realize that…” My sight blurred so I wiped my eyes and sniffed as I felt a hand on my back.

“It’s okay, take your time,” one of them whispered. I nodded my head and calmed down the best I could without breaking out into a sob.

“She didn’t have a pulse.” I cried out, “My son was next to her the entire time until she died. She was dead when I found her, dead.” I couldn’t talk anymore as my body shook with my cries. I could hear someone else crying and the scraping of a chair as someone got up and walked around.

“Th-th-the doctors were able to s-s-start her heart back up though,” I managed to get out. “After multiple tries they got her heart beating but only faintly. They hooked her up immediately and it’s been like this for the past couple days. I called you while I was following the ambulance.”  Pulling Jace to me I rubbed his arm giving my shaky hands something to do.  Two of the guys stayed seated next to me while the other three continued to pace. Jace reached out and touched the guy sitting closest to me arm before I had time to pull him back.

“Sorry,” I whispered. He just shook his head and gave a sad smile before taking a sip of the monster he held between his knees.

            “It’s okay, I’m CC,”

I shook his hand, “Lisa and this is my son Jace.” CC finger waved at Jace who smiled squirming out of my arms and onto the floor. He sat down on the floor and leaned on CC’s legs making the two of us chuckle.

“You look pretty young to be a mom. Are you sure he’s not your brother?” I smiled and looked down at my wedding ring.

“I’m sure; I was there to give birth to him.” CC snorted but took another sip of his drink while reaching down to ruffle Jace’s hair.

            “He’s a cutie,”

“Thanks.” It was quiet then as we waited, waited for what I’m not sure but we waited for something. By this time Jace had managed to crawl into CC’s lap. CC waved me away as I apologized over and over and started to play with my son. Jace’s giggles were the only thing that could be heard in our part of the hallway.

I glanced to my right as the seat squeaked under the weight of another man clad in black. He wore a cowboy hat and kept looking at Andy who couldn’t stop pacing.

“Thanks for calling us Lisa, I’m Ashley,” Cowboy man said. I shook his hand as well.

“No problem I would have hoped someone would call me if something like that happened to my son.” I pointed to Jace and stared at CC as he and my son made faces at each other. I could hear Ashley chuckle but focused on the now open door to Raven’s room. I was getting ready to see who was in there when somebody gently pulled me back.

“It’s just Andy; he needs some time with Raven.” Ash said his face completely sober. I nodded my head and sat back down.

“I don’t mean to be rude but, who are they?” I pointed to the other two that were standing against the wall talking to each other.

“That’s Jake on the left and that’s Jinxx.” I nodded my head and looked at everyone, noticing that everyone looked like they were on the verge of falling asleep. Standing up I stretched and headed towards the cafeteria that the hospital had. Being careful I made six coffees a hot chocolate and grabbed a bunch of brownies before paying.

Taking careful steps I made it back to where the guys were. At the sound of steps they looked up and smiled as they saw the coffees that I was carrying. Jake came over and helped hand out the coffees and sugar and milk packets until I was only carrying my own and Andy’s.

“Is he still in there?” I asked Jake. His eyes got sad but nodded his head. Pushing open the slightly closed door I walked into the room unnoticed. His eyes were red rimmed as tears fell down his; he gripped Raven’s hand and kept on murmuring to himself or to Raven.

“Andy” He lifted his head and watched me but didn’t say anything, “I got you a coffee and a brownie if you want them.”  He blinked his eyes as if he was first seeing me.

            “I’m sorry, what?”

“I got you a coffee and a brownie,” I repeated clearing my throat. He sat up but looked at Raven and I understood.

“What do you normally have in your coffee?”

“Milk,” Nodding I took care of it and handed him the finish product and set his brownie on the bedside table for if he wanted it later.

            “Thank you Lisa,” He whispered.

“No problem, and Andy,” He lifted his head and waited. “she still loves you.” His eyes widened before getting sad again.

“How, I was a total dick to her because I got jealous and thought I saw something that wasn’t what I thought it was.”

I pressed my lips together as I took in his hound dog look. I stayed silent as he raised Raven’s palm to his mouth to leave a kiss.

“True love has a way of making things work even when things get rough,” I said. Turning I walked out of the room and sat back next CC and Ashley as Ashley held Jace in his lap. Jace smiled at me and I knew that things would get better for everyone, they just had too.
