"Well guys I'm back from the dead." Dan joked, his cynical sense of humor showing.
"Sorry I was a bit sick, well really sick." He lied. They all nodded along with him, despite the fact they all knew what really happened. News spread like wild fire. Especially since it was the 'hot new teacher.'
"Can I be real with you for a second?" He asked the class, climbing up on his desk and sitting on top.
"I don't know what to do." Dan began, slowly running a hand through his hair to push it back.
"What do you mean." One of the students asked, concerned for their favorite teacher.
"I just, I'm stuck. I'm so fucking stuck guys." He muttered trailing off.
The class thought he was talking about something completely different. They thought he was talking about the fact that he hadn't taken off his jacket, despite the fact that the classroom was practically an oven. Or the fact that they could see the small bulge from the gauze.
"It's like either way I'm fucked. Mr. Gordon is making me grade your photos harder. And if I do then everything i stand for will be for nothing. And if I don't, he's gonna fire me." They all looked at him, watching as he stressed himself out.
None of them cared. If it meant they got to keep their favorite teacher, they would take a few points lower grade.
"Dan, we don't mind." Matt said, trying to comfort Dan.
"Yeah."
"Yeah it's okay."
"Really, we don't mind."
"Dan, we don't wanna lose you."
And with that he broke down into tears. All the stress and worries, and everything weighing him down until he broke.
"Oh shit I'm fucking crying." He cry laughed, wiping the fresh tears onto his jacket.

After school Kyle had taken him home.
Well they had stopped for ice cream before that.
"I'm really sorry." Dan said, licking the chocolate ice cream.
"It's alright. Dan everyone has moments of weakness." Kyle said, treading lightly on the subject. He knew how emotionally fragile his friend was still. It had only been a few days since the incident itself.
"I mean yeah. But not many people slice and dice themselves and then get fucking alcohol poisoning." He spit, anger rising.
"Shhh." Kyle warned, the rest of the small ice cream shop turning to look at the commotion.
"Dan, you broke down. But we gotta put you back together. Please let me help you." Without a word he took Dan's hand in his. He could feel Dan's racing heart.
"I wanna be whole again." Dan said quietly, watching Kyle gave him a small smile.
All the anger, and angst, and defeat, and sadness were washed away once he looked at Kyle, and his beautiful eyes. His wonderful golden brown eyes that were illuminated by the lights of the ice cream shop.
"Can I help you?"
Dan nodded his head slowly. He felt new, like a brand new man.
"I would love that."
---
"I'll see you tomorrow for breakfast right?" Dan nodded, smiling as he got out of the car.
"9:00 sharp." He grinned, standing to shut his door.
He began walking to his apartment, and then turned back around to watch as Kyle drove away.
It was insane. How insanely happy such a simple thing like ice cream with a friend could make him.
