 Part 1

 *Amelia’s point of view*

Sat in hand over I was already wishing this shift was over. Sometimes 12 and a half hour shifts really were too long, especially on cold winter days like today, those days when all you want to do is curl up in front of the fire with a hot chocolate topped with marshmallows. But I couldn’t, not today, don’t get me wrong I absolutely loved my job, the buzz you got, watching the impact of your care reflect on patients and families, but today I just couldn’t be bothered. This was my last day of four long day shifts and to say I was tired was an understatement, I couldn’t wait to have a few days off before my shifts resumed.

‘So today isn’t just a normal shift’ my mentor smiled

‘Why?’ I asked perking up in my seat

‘Well as you know, Christmas is getting nearer which means lots of visits to the hospital from various charities and celebrities and today we’ve got JLS vising the children’ she smiled ‘so ladies I want you all on your best behaviour, no funny business, strictly business..’ she grinned widely

‘Tracey I think you’re more excited about this than the patients’ my workmate Becca laughed

‘Im a fan…I’ll hold my hands up to that...’ she giggled ‘a staff picture will be needed…and I want you all in it’

‘Do we have too…’ I sighed

‘Yes….dont pretend you’re not looking forward to meeting them’ she replied as I just smiled weakly

It wasn’t anything abnormal having celebrities visiting the wards, its something that would happen on a monthly basis, so the fact that the boyband were visiting really didn’t excite me in the least; I guess it would break the day up a bit so make it seem shorter hopefully; roll on 8pm that’s all I could think of…

‘Right anyway, back to handover, Emily in bed 2 needs hourly obs….Amelia im signing you to her case…’

 ‘Sure….anything else?’ I asked

‘No…think that’s it…back to work…and ladies remember, best behaviour today…’

As the morning slowly passed, I soon found myself sat in the staff canteen surrounded by a few workmates for our breakfast break. Every shift was the same, a few hours running around like a blue arsed fly, then a breakfast break, a bit more running and rushing, then a lunch break, then even more rushing around, and then finally I was able to go home. Being a nurse was a lot more hard work than everyone thought…

‘So…you looking forward to meeting the boys…?’ Becca asked

‘Yeah…I guess its something different for the ward, I know the kids are really excited, there’s quite a few fans on the ward’ I smiled

‘I cant wait’

‘I bet you cant…just keep your cool yeah?’ I giggled

‘You know I will’ she winked

‘I’ll play it ice cold…’
