It had nearly been half an hour when I heard the door open and the nurse come out.
"Well some scrapes and bruises. Not much to worry about. I am going to call his parents to come get him...poor kid. If you want to talk to him till they get here I will write you a pass to class." She said this as she walked to her desk.
I nodded my thanks and walked in. The room was dark and there was little heat. "Hello? You awake?" I asked as I sat down next to his cot.
His head rolled to the side and looked up at me. "Yeah....I am awake. Hey ...thanks for stopping them...I don't know how much worse it would have gotten had you not stepped in and stopped him....I never got your name. What is it?"He sits up slightly, using his elbows for support.
I gave him a warm smile. One that I really didn't have to force. "My name is Ivy...what's yours?"
He looked at me for a full five seconds before answering. "Gabriel.....it's an honor to know you Ivy...She called my dad didn't she?"
I gave him a small nod that triggered a low groan. "He is just going to kill me. We don't have a vehicle for him to come get me..." He fling his head back on the pillow wincing at the impact on his sore skull and covers his face with his hands.
"...I....I can take you home Gabriel..." I say biting my lip. He looked at me like he was dissecting me. little by little pulling me apart and studying my very being. It was unnerving.
"You sure? I don't want to bother anybody...especially someone like you."
I scoffed at his remark. My hands had shot unconsciously to my hips."What do you mean someone like me?" I ask with an offended tone.
"Someone so nice and decent. Someone who shouldn't want to be seen with the town's screw up." He said this like it should mean something but all I heard was he thought I was too good to be seen with him. And that he thought very little of himself.
I get up and walk out the door. Only to talk to the nurse but he must have thought I had left because he was surprised when I came back inside jingling my keys. His eyes lit up "You mean you're going to actually take me home?"
I nodded and reached for his things "Come on. Let's go." I say waiting for him by the door. He gets up slowly and walks out to the parking lot with me. I set his things in the compartment of the cycle.
"Oh so you're the one who came in on the sick bike this morning." He says admiring the bike. I laugh and hand him my one and only helmet. "Safety first, slick. Get on and hold tight." I say swinging my leg over the seat, propping it up so he can climb on. Slowly he clambered onto the seat and wrapped his arms around my torso. Electric sparks ran through my nerves.
I revved the engine and pulled out of the lot.
"Okay. Now, I need directions, I don't know the town well enough yet."
"Alright. Turn left and drive the main road for about 15 minutes."
My eyebrows knit together as I drive but I didn't say anything.
This road seemed familiar, but it didn't dawn on me till he told me to turn right on Zeal Street. I lived on Zeal Street. He pointed to a house on my left.....right next door to my house.
I pulled in the driveway and helped him off the bike as I helped him onto his porch. I was about to leave when I did something stupid.
"Hey, Gabriel....after school can I stop in to check up on you...I'm...my house is like right next door and....I just want to make sure that you are okay." I say fidgeting slightly.
He was silent for a moment a bit shocked then nodded. "Yeah. I would like that. "He says, placing his hand on the door. I nod and put my helmet on, pulling back out of the driveway. Going back to the hell hole these people called school.
Hours of boredom later I'm on my way home. I pull my bike into my driveway, but instead of going onto my porch I walk across the grass and knock on Gabriel's door.
The man that answered the door was definitely not him. "Yes? May I help you?"
His voice was deep but he had the same color hair and eyes of Gabriel.
"My name is Ivy. I am your new neighbor. I'm the one who brought Gabriel home today...I came over to check up on him...is he awake or should I come back some other time?" I asked if my voice was level I didn't know, but what I did know was I was terrified of him.
"If he is still here he is up in his room." The man said, stepping aside to let me in. "Second room on your right."
I thanked him and slowly made my way upstairs and knocked on his door lightly.
Nothing.
I knocked again. "Gabriel! It's Ivy." still nothing.
"Gabriel, I am coming in." I twist the knob on the door and walk in.
It was dark in his room. That was fine. I saw a figure over on the bed and knew why he didn't hear me or wake up. I walked across the room, removed the headphones from his ears, and pulled the blanket up over top of him. I scribbled a note down on a piece of paper and set it on his phone. And with that I left.
I don't know why....but the way I have been acting and worrying....to my dismay....I think I have found my mate.
