I frowned when I saw Nicole sitting by herself in the cafeteria . She was usually accompanied by Deti and Sofia and it was with them I sat in lunch for the past four days. The previous day Chloe had left for Atlanta without a word and I hadn't spotted Jeff in a while. Neither of them picked my calls ,so I decided to give them some time and kept to myself.
I sat abreast Nicole , dragging the chair back and looking around .
"Can't find either of them " I asked placing my tray of lunch beside hers."Deti's caught with flu"
I assumed Sofia must be with her.
"We paid her a visit this morning , she's recuperating."
"Oh, so Sofia's not with her-"
"No. Her ex is leaving and she thought she would pay him a visit .She might as well be on the way back " she said shrugging.
"Hmm"
"But I am curious on why you haven't visited him yet ?"
"Who?"
"Ryan of course ."
"You mean Ryan Thompson?"
"Yes. Your boyfriend and you don't have to panic, I didn't tell Sofia about you guys "she grinned as though she had saved me from a tough spot.I grimaced and made a face .
I was sick of trying to prove everyone that we weren't dating but something she said clicked into place.
Ryan had mentioned Sofia once when we had met in the woods and I realized with a start that he had been talking about none other than Nicole's friend ." Where is he going ?"I asked baffled.
"How would I know but don't you think its weird with everyone leaving the university lately? First Luke, then Chlo-"
"Please don't bring up the subject" I pleaded.
"Did Sofia mention when he planned to leave ?" I asked with growing agitation.
"Now ! He might be at the airport now !"she gushed." I don't think you can make it " she continued when I eyed the exit .
That made my mind up. I threw my bag over my shoulders and half ran towards my car .
"He's not leaving without giving me a reason "I muttered under my breadth.
On the way I tried calling him but my calls went unanswered.
It annoyed me the most when people ignored my calls. I felt the need to bite their head off.
I hit the accelerator and my car raced down the streets towards the airport.--------------------------------
"Are my eyes deceiving me or is it really you ?"
"You have gone nuts!"I exploded.
"That I have "
"Thank goodness , the flight is an hour late "
"Actually forty five minutes "he corrected. So , why are you here ?"
"Your joking, right ?"
"No , I'm not and I do want to know why you are here exactly"
"What's with you acting all strange lately and to answer your question I came here to know why the bloody hell you are leaving "
"That's it ?"
"What else did you expect?"
"Nothing ...i'm leaving to get away from you "
I blinked.
His face was devoid of any emotion and his eyes looked blank like he was intentionally blocking me from his thoughts."Because of me ?" I whispered .
Maybe I shouldn't have come.
"What did I do ?"
"Can you please be serious for a few minutes?" He begged looking into my eyes trying to gouge out my thoughts .
"I am .Ryan are you alright?"
He ignored my question.
"Don't you get it or are you are putting on an act and playing innocent?"
He completely lost me.
"Pardon-"
"Don't tell me you don't know how much you affect me "
I fell silent .
"I thought...." My voice trailed away not sure what to reply .
"What does this have to do with your departure?" I threw the question at him.
"Everything." There was a moment's pause before he continued. "I'm madly in love with you but it hurts to know that I mean nothing to you "
I opened my mouth to argue but he cut me off again .
"Not that I blame you . I can tell that you have an unpleasant past that you wish not to speak and there seems to be an inner battle you fight within yourself and sometimes.......you don't even act human "
I could feel the blood drain from my cheeks and I swallowed hard . I wasn't sure he noted the change but he kept going all the same .
