Reena: It has already been three days since the terrorists got into our school. I was operated on that same day to remove the bullet from my shoulder. Of course, the school contacted my family of my incident. My father wanted to come but I told him not to. I said that I’m fine and he believed me. I knew that he had a very busy schedule and I didn’t want to bother him.
Mariella has always at my side when I was transferred to the recovery room.
“I’m okay. Go back to your room and get a proper sleep.” I tell her.
“But I’m not sleepy at all.” She says but I can see her eyes dropping. It is already around 11:30 in the evening.
Did I mention that Philanter Academy has its own hospital inside? It’s not that big though but complete with all the needed equipment and apparatus.
“I can see clearly that your eyes are about to close.” I say. “Don’t worry about me. I can call the nurse if I need something. Hey, do you want to be late tomorrow?”
“But…”
“No buts. Just go on, okay?” I insist. She looks at me for a long time.
“Okay. You win.” Mariella says. “But I’ll visit you again until the doctor says that you can be discharged.”
I laugh. “Fine…see you tomorrow.”
“Bye…”
I watch her go out of the room. I sigh. I stare at the ceiling. The room that I am currently occupying has four beds and I am the only patient.
“I admit…It’s quite lonely without Mariella here. Even just her presence makes a difference.” I sigh again.
A few minutes after Mariella left, I suddenly hear some voices just outside my door then it opens.
“Mariella?” I ask but I am completely wrong.
“Miss Vonsberg said that you’re still awake. We met her outside.” He says before closing the door. I catch a glimpse of Edward Sanders just standing outside.
“Y-you’re…” I stutter. Why am I stuttering?
“This is actually not the first time that we’ve met but a proper introduction is in order.” He says as he walks towards my bed. “I am Vincent Sanders. It’s a pleasure to meet you.” He offers his hand. I notice he is wearing two rings in each of his hands—white on the right while black on the left.
“Reena Brightnott.” I say as I take his hand. His hand is bigger than mine but it is warm and it really felt good I admit. I also observe that there are a few scars on his hands. I want to ask him but I decided not to.
He releases my hand and stares at me. I really wonder if he really is blind because it doesn’t look like it. Upon closer observation, he looks taller. The wind must be strong outside because his hair is windswept. His crystal blue eyes are beautiful behind his glasses.
I suddenly become aware that we are silent and I notice that he is just standing. I struggle to make some space.
“What are you doing? Are you trying to stand?” he asks.
“You can sit at the foot of my bed.” I offer.
“Oh…thank you but I’m alright standing. I don’t want to cause you any discomfort.”
