Once school resumed, I found a job to earn some money. Ryan and I argued about it with him, claiming I didn't need to worry about money, but I wanted my own. Call it independence, but it's something I felt strongly about in my life. He finally relented and stopped arguing about it. Plus, Elena told him to pick his battles with me.

I went down to a local bakery. It was a mom and pop bakery that a woman named Kate ran. I applied, and she interviewed me. I guess I okayed because she hired me on the spot. She also worked around my class schedule, so that meant evenings, which impacted my time with my friends.

They decided that it would not happen and ended up spending time at the bakery along with money. Kate didn't mind since they were her best customers, plus she grew fond of them, especially Frazier. Why? I do not understand.

Kate was in her early 60s with grayish hair and an attractive look for her. She was also grandmotherly to all of us, plus the pay was decent. It was a mom and pop bakery, and I spent most of my evenings working. People from school would come in from time to time to pick up cupcakes or something sweet for dessert.

Ryan would always stop by when I was getting off work to walk me back to the dorm. The others offered, but Ryan declined, wanting to spend time alone with me.

Tonight was an unusually busy time at the bakery. So, we were working, and Frazier offered to help us out, making Kate's night. Ryan was running behind and told us to wait. He would be there soon.

We finished up with our last customer, and I locked up so we could clean up. I was wiping off the tables when Frazier walked out, yelling, "Hey, Cupcake!"

I looked at him and rolled my eyes. "You know, ever since you started calling me that, Ryan has called me it."

"Well, you are sweet and soft like a cupcake," he grinned.

"I'll give you a cupcake," I growled, throwing my towel at him.

"Frazier, can you help me with some supplies in the back?" Kate asked.

"Be right there, Kate," he chimed.

I shook my head and grabbed another towel as I finished cleaning the tables. As I finished up my last meal, I heard knocking on the glass. I turned to see three guys standing there, knocking. I walked over to the door and said through the windows, "Sorry, we're closed."

"Aw, come on, we just wanted to buy some cupcakes for our girls," one yelled through the glass.

"Sorry, we're closed. Come back tomorrow," I told the guys.

They shrugged and walked away. I turned the open sign to closed and hit the lights. As I walk towards the back, I heard a crash with a brick flying, almost smacking me. I turned around to see the three guys coming inside. They walked towards me, and I backed up, hitting a table.

"I-I s-said we-we're closed." I was so scared that I started stuttering.

"Look here, guys, this is the bitch that got Max into trouble by opening her mouth," the middle one grinned.

"Maybe we should teach her what it means to snitch on a brother," the one on the left smirked.

"Or better yet, finish what he started," the one on the right shrugged.

"Leave me alone," I whispered, feeling terrified.

"Aw, you don't have your bodyguards with you to protect you this time," the middle one said, fanning his breath on me, making my skin crawl.

It was my only chance to fight, so that's what I did. I kneed the one in the middle in the manhood, pushing him over and ran when the one on the right grab me by the hair, yanking me back. I found my voice and yelled, "Frazier, help!" He threw me to the ground and came towards me as I crawled backward.
