Epilogue

When the plane landed in LAX airport Nathan was impatiently drumming his fingers on the chair he was sat in. It had been a long flight which had given him plenty of time to think about what could possibly have happened to Skye in the time they had been apart. He was overprotective and over worried. If anything happened to her he would never forgive himself. But he brushed off the thoughts, trusting that she could protect herself.

Once he was out of the airport he took the twenty minute taxi ride to his flat which of course seemed longer than it was. He was filled with a rush of different emotions from dread to excitement. The taxi finally pulled up outside the familiar building and Nathan, filled with uncertainty took his suitcase out of the car and paid the driver. He waited until the taxi was gone before turning to look at the tall building.

Nathan walked as normally as he could into the building and into the elevator. After briefly closing his eyes he tapped in the code for his floor and the doors closed. He could hear his heart beating above the quiet elevator music. The doors pinged before opening to reveal the floor his apartment was on. He stepped out of the metal cube and slowly walked towards the door. He dug through his pocket for the keys and inserted the correct one in the keyhole.

Nathan thought about the first time Skye had come to his flat. He missed her presence. He missed her touch, her scent. He missed her smile and her voice. Nathan pushed the door open, not able to cope without her anymore. Leaving his suitcase in the foyer and his keys in the door, he went into the living room. It was completely empty and there was no sign of anyone's presence. He slowly walked further into the bare room. He was filled with an ache that reminded him of the pain he always felt when Skye was gone. Nathan turned right into the bedroom. The whole place seemed much smaller without furniture. The bed that usually took up the whole of the bedroom was gone. There was only one thing in the room and that was the girl curled up in the corner.

"How long have you been here?" Nathan managed, refraining from wrapping his arms around her. Skye stayed silent as he sat on the floor beside her. "Why did you leave?" he asked softly. She looked up at him with tears in her eyes. Without saying a word she took his hand and placed it over her stomach.

"He died," she whispered. Nathan's eyes widened as Skye let out a sob. Nathan wrapped his arms around her as he thought about what he had just been told. She had been carrying his baby. "I had...a...miscarriage," Skye cried and he hushed her. He could've been a dad. Nathan was filled with guilt. He had promised Skye he'd protect her and because he had failed that he had lost a beautiful baby.

"Ssh," he soothed, "It's okay. I'm here baby." Skye looked up at him and smiled weakly. "I love you," she whispered and kissed his jawline.

Although it may not have been everything they wanted, they had each other. She needed him like a rainbow needed sun. And he intended to stay in her presence forever because her smile was too captivating to let go.

"And give me all your love in case the sun doesn't shine when we awaken."
