Josie sighed as she walked through the school hallway, bumping into teens greeting their friends as it was their first day back to school as sophomores.

"Hey, Josie, wait up." She heard someone say, making her stop and turn around to find Clay Jensen pushing through people to get to her. "Where have you been? I've been trying to reach you for the past week. Are you okay?"

Josie nodded, a smile on her face, "I'm okay. Buster ate my charger and I haven't gotten around to buying a new one and well, my phone's dead." She shrugged.

"Cons of having a dog, I guess." Clay chuckled.

"Yeah," Josie shrugged.

"I wa-"

"Hey! Blair! Looking good, babe!" Bryce swaggered in, throwing his arm around Josie's shoulders making her shudder.

"Thanks, Bryce, please don't touch me." She gave him a sarcastic smile, removing his arm from her shoulders.

"Maybe not in public." Bryce smirked.

"Maybe not ever, moron." Josie groaned before gripping Clay's arm and walking off. "I honestly think he has an extra asshole chromosome in him."

"Wouldn't that make him have Down Syndrome? If he had an extra chromosome I mean." Clay asked, adjusting his backpack on his back.

Josie shook her head, "No, it'd make him Bryce Walker with an extra asshole chromosome. A chromosome that has asshole genes in it."

"We really are nerds, do you know that?" Clay chuckled.

"I know, right?" Josie stopped in front of her English class. "See you during lunch?"

Clay nodded before giving the girl a quick hug before leaving to go to his class.

Josie entered the classroom where there were kids sitting before she heard the final bell ring as she sat down beside the one and only Zach Dempsey.

"Hey, Josie." Zach smiled at her which she returned.

"Hey, Zach. How was your summer?" She asked, taking out her notebook.

"Great! Lots of basketball practice. What about you?"

"Good. Got a job and trimmed my hair." Josie shrugged, making Zach smile at her.

"You look good, by the way." Zach said.

"Thanks, Zach. So do you."

"Hi, new girls?" Josie smiled as she sat in front of two girls who looked unfamiliar in the cafeteria during lunch break.

The one with flushed cheeks, fair skin, kind of frizzy long hair and pink lips put a locket of hair behind her ear before nodding, "Yeah, my name is Hannah Baker."

"And I'm Jessica Davis." The one with a darker skin, curly hair and round face said.

"My name's Josie Blair aka your new best friend." Josie grinned.
