Chapter 49

Mia's POV

"I have a hunch that he's your first love," my mum suddenly spoke, breaking my thoughts.

How did she manage to know so much about me? Mother's intuition, I guess.

"Yes, he is. No matter how bizarre our situation is..."

"Well, I really do want to hear the whole story but I-I just..." She stopped herself, gathering her thoughts.

She just what? Her reaction looked reluctant and I wanted to urge her on. Was she against us being together?

"Just what?" I asked, trying to be patient.

"I'm not against you both being together at all. I'm very concerned because he's a very famous singer and you're just a regular, normal girl. "

"I thought I was a regular average Jane too until I found out that I am the heiress to Vance Corporations. Trust me, I am far from normal."

"I suppose. But I've been keeping my eye on those boys and all the hate their love interests get from their fans - it's appalling." Her words did hold some truth. They brought back memories of what Laura did to Zayn - it was terrifying to know his life was being threatened. But she was just a troubled teenager, misunderstood and abandoned by her own parents.

"That's why you're concerned?" I asked.

"I'm just very protective of my daughter alright...Let's go inside, it's getting chilly. Maybe Darcy or Fancy prepared some lunch for us." She insisted, and I helped her onto the wheelchair. Her reasoning made sense but if she was truly worried about me, wouldn't she had sheltered me her whole life by my side?

When we strolled into the kitchen, Fancy was already preparing some lunch like my mum guessed. She was a stout girl, maybe around her early 20s like me, both her and Darcy were hired in secret by father. I had no idea how that worked. Was there some hidden maid service only hired in the utmost secrecy? Who knows.

"Good afternoon Ms. Vance, Mia! Lovely day for a walk, is it not!" She wailed from the kitchen counters, her face covered with marks of white flour.

"What are we making my dear?" My mother asked as I pushed her into her place by the table.

"Just some Shepard's pie made from scratch." She proudly admitted.

"Is there anything I could help you with, Fancy?" I asked, walking towards her.

"Not really. I think I've got it all. Oh, but would you mind washing my dishes while I keep watch on the pie? I'm afraid it might burn if I don't keep my eye on it."

"Not at all." I agreed and went right to the sink filled with the pile of dishes.

Over these past months, I've become really close to both Fancy and Darcy. It was nice to have company around. I thought I would be lonely here taking care of my ill mother, but it couldn't have been better.

"Good night." I said and tucked her in the sheets. Once I turned to leave the room, there was a warm hand on my wrist, stopping me from taking a step.

"Was there anything else you needed?"

"Stay a little longer, wont you? I wanted to tell you some things .. before it's too late." She pleaded.

"Don't say things like that. You could tell me tomorrow, okay?" I insisted, trying to give her some motivation to wake up tomorrow. I didn't want another scene like this morning to repeat.

She arched her brow, telling me with her glare to sit down. Eventually I gave in, settled down on the chair, and slapped my hands against my thighs.
