Chapter 77

Mia's POV

Today was the big day. The day where I would be formally introduced as the heiress of Vance Corporations. It was a pretty intimidating thought. I was only twenty four and here I was, with the world right in front of me.

I slipped into the grey dress Winnie bought for me yesterday before a knock came at the door. These spontaneous knocks were really starting to get annoying.

When I opened the door, Winnie was standing there in a white dress that passed her right above her knees, giving me a warm smile. Behind her stood two strangers, a man whose hair was gelled to the side and a woman with curly ginger hair, both with pale skin. With a snap of Winnie's fingers, the two rushed in, dragged me by my arms to the mirror that hung on the wall in the bedroom. The man took out an expensive curling iron along with a huge stash of makeup while the girl played with the ends of my dull brown hair. Her gorgeous locks really made mine look like strayed pieces of rope.

"Uh. What exactly is going on here?" I asked Winnie who was leaning by the door, giving me a satisfying look.

"They're here to give you a make over. The conference is in an hour and you have to look presentable."

I should have seen this coming. Winnie was the type of sister to do this. Even though sometimes I was naïve, she was more so than I ever could be.

Approximately a good ten minutes passed before I was staring at a completely different person in the mirror. My lips were a dark red, my eyes had a subtle wing of eyeliner at the end, my hair was styled like a flapper in the 1920s in the America's - on the exception of the ugly band around my head, thank goodness I didn't have to wear that. The look was definitely not me but I guess I didn't really have a say since Winnie was clapping her hands in excitement. She must really approve of how I looked - proper and presentable. More like a bratty, spoiled rich girl.

"Where's dad?" I asked Winnie who was enjoying a cup of tea in the living room after the two stylists left.

"He's downstairs, getting everything ready," she answered. "Why?"

"Just wondering. I just .. I don't know what to expect..."

She set her cup down on the coffee table before approaching me.

"Don't be afraid. Everything will be over within half an hour. The conference room will only have about fifty to seventy board of directors."

"Only?" Twenty people was already a large number.

"You will be fine. Don't stress about it too much. Ben and I will be there and dad...It'll be okay," she reassured me, brushing a piece of hair behind my ear.

"Do they know about my past .. you know. How unstable I used to be..."

"No, no one really knows nor should it have any impact on your legitimacy as the director," she opened her mouth to continue but again - a knock at the door.

Winnie walked over to open it, quietly muttering a few okay's to the gentleman who interrupted before he left.

"Who was that?" I asked her.

"They're ready for us," she reached for my hands. "Just take a deep breath."

I did as she told me.

"Okay. It'll be over before you know it."

The way she could easily calm someone was a quality I wish I had. Even though we haven't seen in each other in years, our bond as sisters never changed. We had a fallout once but that was only because she took the last piece of cake from the fridge.
