Chapter 78

Mia's POV

"You're joking, right? I can't marry him!" I argued with my father who was leaning back in his chair. I came up here to persuade him that this was unnecessary but seems as though Zayn's convincing words already impacted his decision not to budge. Besides, businessmen never go back on their words.

"Well, I think it's a wi--"

"Don't say win-win. How is this a win-win for me? Huh? Why can't you stop being selfish for one minute and let me take control of my own life?"

"I know, it comes off like that. But trust me, Zayn is the perfect strategy to keep you safe," he advised, resting his elbows on his desk.

"See, everything about this is wrong. You see him as a strategy, as some disposable chess piece you can control but he's not! You don't see him as my fiancé!"

"So you're saying he is your fiancé?"

"What?! No, that's not what I meant," I was on my tipping point. I seated myself in one of the chairs to calm my nerves before they go flying off the walls. "I thought you wanted me out of the public eye. Plus I thought you didn't like Zayn."

"Now what would make you think that?"

"Because you refer to him as 'that Malik boy'."

"That doesn't mean I don't like him," he politely replied.

"Okay, then, why do I need to be kept safe? I'm sure there are other ways to go about that."

Before he could answer my thought, someone interrupted us by coming into the room. When I turned to see Zayn looking right at me, my breath stopped. It happened everytime he was around. I didn't think I could ever get used to being around him...ever.

"Zayn, have a seat. We were just talking about you," my father welcomed him, waving his arm to the chair next to me. "Mia here seems to think that I don't like you."

"Why is that, Mia?" Zayn asked not even offended by my father's remark. They were joining forces against me. Both of them didn't care what I want, they only cared about what concerned them. Both of them were being selfish and they had no problem with it.

Knowing that I didn't have to answer to neither of them, I rose from my chair and stormed out of the room, scaring Mrs. Reynolds in the process. I sincerely apologized and continued down the hallway to the lift. As soon as the doors closed, I heaved a sigh of relief thinking that Zayn didn't follow me. Not a second later, the bell of the elevator rang signaling th doors to slide back open and there he stood, keeping his gaze on the floor before his eyes met mine.

Without saying anything to each other, he took two steps forward before pressing my floor, letting the doors glide back to a close.

The air was silent, not the comfortable silence like before but stiff. Surely he had to know how I was feeling right now. I was angry with him. I felt cheated, blindsided, even a little betrayed.

He was acting as if being engaged was such a simple matter.

"What are you thinking about?" He asked, breaking the long silence. Wanting him to suffer longer, I kept my eyes straight. "I know you think this is unfair and reckless of me. But this was bound to happen."

"Bound to happen?" I scoffed. "What? You think I was going to agree when you asked me to marry you. Aren't you thinking too highly of yourself..but then again when have you ever considered yourself below netizens of this country. High and mighty Zayn always so confident about everything. What if I said no? What if I said I wasn't ready?"
