Chapter 55

Mia's POV

I was famished since Zayn's untimely arrival last night caused me to skip dinner. Hopefully there was something in the fridge I could easily make, it's been awhile since I've gone to the grocery store. The nearest one I usually went to was an hour drive away and since my father didn't want me out much, I tried to refrain from going out. Only when it was necessary.

"You're wearing makeup."

Zayn suddenly entered the dining room after his voice. His remark caught me off guard while I was cutting off the green stems of the strawberries I was going to add to my smoothie for breakfast. Luckily I didn't cut myself. That would have been a disaster.

"And why does it matter? You've seen me wear makeup before," I tried to act casual even though I instantly felt insecure. He leaned across the granite counter, and it was so hard trying to avoid his groomed face.

"You look," he hesitated for a second while I finally gave in and looked at him. "Nice," he finished his statement nervously and I grinned. He shaved, that's why he was taking so long.

"Thank you," I responded, guiding my attention back to the few strawberries I had left to cut. He never complimented me often so I'm taking each one with much appreciation.

"What are you making for breakfast? I'm starving," Zayn held his stomach while walking towards the stainless steel fridge.

"Nothing much. I was going to make a strawberry smoothie with some blueberries and yogurt," I answered and he turned to me, his face filled with a 'really?' look.

"That's all your having?"

"Yeah. I don't like to eat much in the morning," I told him. "Did you want some?"

"How about that McDonald's and you had that steak bagel with the two hash browns?!" He sounded so worried for some reason. It was kind of adorable.

And I was touched. He still remembered what I had for breakfast from three years ago.

"How do you remember that?"

"Uh, remember what?" He was acting clueless as he returned his attention back inside the fridge.

"Stop playing dumb. You know exactly what I'm asking," I confidently remarked.

"Okay," he started, closed the fridge door and leaned against it, digging his hands in his pockets. "... it was just a moment I couldn't forget."

"Why?"

"I don't know."

"You don't know," I repeated, carefully inspecting for fibbing in his eyes.

"Tell me then because you never answered me. Why do you continue to say things about me that I don't know you know about?" He was taking slow strides around the island counter and I started to feel nervous as he carefully approached.

"Uh, well, I just have a good memory," I quickly explained, hoping he would drop the topic. I turned around and placed the last bits of strawberries into the blender.

"Good memory, eh? What's my favorite book?"

"The Harry Potter Series," I answered, not realizing I had answered.

"Color?"

"Blue?"

"Animal?"

"Lion. Or was it cats? Why does this even matter?" I whined as I pressed the 'on' button but a large hand grabbed mine before I could, and I turned around to see Zayn's jaw right in my face.
