The howls seemed to be only a few yards away from the five of us, and you knew that every person there was scared out of their wits.

Chris had his pistol in the air, ready to aim and despite his fears, seemed to be ready to defend us.

"I think that they're coyotes. No other animal would howl like that."

We all looked at each other in fear and pure confusion as to what to do next.

"Well, maybe we should take turns guarding...at least for tonight," said Gordie.

We all nodded our heads in agreement.

*time goes by...*

Chris just shifted out with you. It is your turn to guard, and as the night goes on, you seem to feel more lonely than ever.

God, it's spooky out here...hopefully no coyotes come out to eat me....

Your fears start to increase and you start to move more at every sound.

A branch cracks and immediately you jump, pistol in hand, only to find Vern coming towards you.

"Don't be scared, (Y/N), its only me!"

You smile and let out a sigh of relief as Vern comes to sit next to you near the tree.

"Hey, Vern-O."

"How's guarding going?"

"I guess it's okay. Being out here in the woods is spooky."

"Well, not with you around!" exclaimed Vern.

You smile and start to blush a little bit. Vern starts to look uneasy as he looks over to the campfire again.

"You okay there, Vern?"

"I guess, it's just...the boys keep bugging me about you."

"What is it?"

"Um..." Vern hesitates for a few seconds, "I like you a lot, love to be accurate. I love you."

He blushes and in a split second, his face is a crimson shade.

"Hey Vern?"

"Yeah?"

"Guarding is better with you around, you know why?"

"Why?"

You kiss him on the cheek, and he giggles, the shade of crimson on his face darkening more and more as you pull back and smile at him.

"Because you spend more time with your loved ones."
