Chapter 33 – True Colors

Kai

"Kai! What the hell happened?" Irene stomped down the hallway looking pissed. Fuck, I was not looking forward to her temper tantrum to what I had to say. "I can't believe you would cancel a broadcast at the last minute. I ended up looking like a fool."

"Irene." I grimaced. "I feel bad for letting you show up alone but I had something come up."

"Kai, baby. It's okay." She slid close to me and hooked her arm with mine, leaning against my side. "I'll forgive you."

Her act only managed to make me grimace even more. She was ready to rip me a new one but she probably realized I was not in a mood to take any of her shit at the moment.

"Irene, we need to talk." I said putting some distance between us. "Can I take you some where?"

"Perfect, I'm due to show my face for a coffee I'm endorsing. I need to stop by one of the café's for that. We can go together." She grinned looking pleased.

"I was thinking somewhere out of the public eye Irene." I tried to explain but knew now that she had gotten the idea for an opportunity to be seen with me, she wasn't going to let it go.

"Kai, I've got a full schedule. I have no spare time." She whined.

No spare time my ass. "You leave me no choice then." I said looking up and down the hallway before leading her into one of the empty studios.

"Kai! I'm already running late as it is." She tried to stop me but I Kept going, knowing she would follow. I closed the door behind us and turned around to face her. "Kai what's going on?"

"Irene, we need to stop this." I said starting the battle that had been long overdue. Over the few weeks I was forced to spend with her, I realized something. She was nowhere close to the sweet girl I had thought myself to be in love with all those year ago. Then again was she ever that sweet? It was a stupid ideal that I had been imagining and nothing more. I was starting to even question whether I was ever even in love with her. What I thought I felt for her seem like a fucking joke compared to the way Jina made me feel.

"What do you mean?" She looked worried but tried to play ignorant.

"We both know Irene that we aren't together. I made it clear when I dropped you off at your place that night almost a month ago. I've played the act for the cameras because I didn't want my reputation to ruin your career but I'm ready to clear everything up." What I actually wanted to say sounded much more harsh but I was trying to take the higher ground here.

She stared at me for a moment before breaking out in a laugh. "Kai." She chuckled. "What is this? A surprise event? A hidden camera?"

"Irene. I'm serious." I frowned at her reaction. I expected the hysteric but not exactly for her to brush it off like this.

"What do you mean you are serious?" She smirked.

"Exactly that. What's so hard to understand?" I ran my hand through my hair feeling frustrated but didn't want to loose my cool. "You know the only reason I've gone ahead with this charade was because we were photographed at your apartment building. If I had denied a relationship between us then your reputation would have been ruined. I was only being considerate for you and I expect for you to be grateful." The fact that I expected her to publically break tings off with me in the least dramatic way possible was silently implied.

"I can't believe what rubbish you are talking about!" Irene's voice rose with her temper.

"In fact I'm willing to go ahead and be the one that gets dumped. That way you won't be affected at all Irene but I want you to make the statement as soon as possible." I moved to the couch in the corner and took a seat. It looked like she wasn't really taking subtle hints, so going ahead and voicing them seemed the better choice after all.
