Chapter 11- Zillah

When I awoke it was raining, and sand was sticking to ever available spot of skin. I was soaking wet, freezing cold, and longed for the comfort of my family. I rolled over, and found a body. Shocked I opened my eyes and sat up, only to find Edward.

"Edward?"I whispered.

"Right here."He mumbled, rolling over to face me.

"Why did you leave your ship? I could've managed."I replied indignantly.

"Zillah, in case you haven't noticed, this is a deserted island. Food and water won't be just handed to you."Edward replied, sounding slightly annoyed.

"But what about your ship, and the King's ship?"I asked, worried about what I knew to be Edward's pride and joy.

"Johnny will get rid of the soldiers, and then hopefully come back for us."Edward answered, rolling back over.

"Why don't you want to talk?"I asked.

"I just swam who knows how far. I don't feel like talking."Edward said with a yawn.

"So did I."I said.

"Yes, but you got to nap afterwards. I laid here awake making sure you were okay before I passed out from exertion."Edward said with yet another yawn.

"Fine then, sleep, I'm going to go find some firewood."I said, standing and stretching my sore and tired arms.

"It's all wet and any dry wood wouldn't ignite in the rain."Edward mumbled sleepily.

"But I'm cold!"I complained.

"So am I, we can think in the morning after food and water have been found, and sleep has been had."Edward said, pulling me back down to the ground.

"Fine."I relented, pulling my legs up to my chest.

The night passed agonizingly slow, but after hours of tossing and turning on the rough pebbles of sand, the sun began its rise. As I lay on the beach, an occasional wave lapping at my feet, I felt like the princess in the Princess and the Pea, only instead of one pea, there were millions. Eventually Edward stirred, and stood up, helping me to my feet.

"We are going to need food."Edward said his voice rough and gravelly from sleep, and lack of water.

"And water."My voice didn't sound like my own. Thick and raspy like his.

Edward nodded his agreement.

"We shouldn't split up. We need to stick together."Edward said, grabbing my hand.

He led me off through an opening in the dense brush. We came across several berry bushes which Edward declared edible. After several hot and humid hours Edward and I came across a large stream, full of fresh water. Laughing I ran into the water, scooping some to my mouth and dribbling it on my hair and face while Edward drank his fill.

"Let's follow this and see how far it goes."Edward said, helping me over a slippery patch of moss.
