Chapter 37- Zillah
After I left Edward, however reluctant, I went inside to find Mother. She was sitting in the parlor with a smile on her face and a laugh in her eyes.
"You knew!"I accused.
"Well of course darling. I normally wouldn't leave my daughter alone with a gentleman."Mother replied.
"I am so happy."I cried.
"So you said yes."Mother said.
"Yeah, but what are we to do?"I asked.
"Have a wedding!"Mother said.
"I know that, but before that. And don't say plan the wedding."I said, feeling suddenly cross.
"Zillah, why don't you go take a nap."My mother suggested. I took her advice, figuring she knew more about being pregnant that I did.
When I awoke again it was almost dark, and my stomach felt awfully empty. I got out of bed and went down to the kitchen to find Mother standing at the stove.
"Mother?"I asked.
"Hey dear, soup?"She asked. I nodded my head.
"Why are you still up?"I asked.
"I knew you would be hungry."She explained, but it sounded like she was going to say more.
"Is that all?"I asked slowly.
"Edward never, Edward never returned Zillah."She said.
"Oh, he probably ran into Johnny or someone and got held up."I said, not thinking about it much.
"I don't know if it means anything, and I'm not saying it does, but Aaron's ship left not long ago."Mother added.
"So, he can leave whenever he wants."I said.
My mother gave up, and gave me the soup. After I ate I went for a walk in the dark garden. I carried a lantern for light, and had my thin black shawl draped over my gold gown. I quickly ran up to my room and found my sturdy walking shoes, and went down into town. I didn't know why I was there, it wasn't exactly safe, but I knew I couldn't go home. I wandered around town until I found an unnaturally dark spot. I had no choice but to go through it, and in doing so, I tripped over something. It seemed to be a hat or something, but I left well enough alone, thinking it belonged to some drunken man. After several hours of walking my eyes began to droop, so I wandered back home, and collapsed into bed. I changed into my nightgown, and pulled my hair back in a tight braid. I curled up in the cold covers, and found sleep came quickly.
