The story is set a couple of days after the epilogue of City Of Lost Souls
CHAPTER 1 - OFFERS -
"So have you been... fried yet?" Isabelle asked hesitantly, feeling as if she was tip-toeing into dangerous territory with her questioning. She was perched on the edge of her grand poster bed, picking at the beads of her pink and black silken pillow whilst staring at Clary curiously.
"...Fried?" Clary replied, not caring to hide the look of sheer thoughtfulness on her face. Isabelle noticed that she was repeatedly spinning her stele around in her hand; a nervous habit she must have acquired in recent days.
"You know... zapped?" Isabelle sighed in pure frustration, before beginning again. "Has Jace burned you with that heavenly fire thing yet?"
"Oh," Clary said in recognition, "Well a couple of times, but it wasn't so bad I guess."
Poor Clary, Isabelle thought. Fate had never been kind to her and Jace; they always had a major catastrophe of some sort to deal with, and never enough time to just be teenagers. A bit of kidnapping here, a pinch of possession there, and one psychopathic brother lurking around Raziel knows where. She was lucky enough to have some sense of normalcy with Simon - Well, as much as a half angel and a sun-strolling Jewish vampire can have.
Her thoughts were interrupted when Alec began to stir, lifting one eye open to check his surroundings, just as Church their cat often did. He was slumped in the corner of Isabelles' room, fully awake, but in a state of depression so deep he just ignored everything that was going on around him. She didn't even have to ask: it was obvious that Magnus was the cause of his restless sleep and troubled conscience.
After spotting Izzy staring at him, Alec reluctantly rose from his 'seat' and walked straight out of the door, bidding goodbye to Clary with a slight nod, and shooting daggers at Izzy.
"Jeez, he's been like this ever since the breakup." Izzy said moodily.
"You can't exactly blame him - how would you feel if Simon dumped you?" Clary retorted, her voice practically dripping with sympathy.
Isabelle's laughter echoed throughout the room, as she defensively replied "SIMON breaking up with ME? Not a chance Clary. If anything, it will be the other way round. And anyways, Magnus was the one who-"
At that moment, the door swung open with a loud creak and Alec tumbled onto the floor, landing flat on his face. He groaned loudly, before dusting himself off and standing up.
"Eavesdropping were we Alec?" Clary asked sarcastically, not a trace of sympathy left in her voice.
"Stay out of it Clary!" Alec snapped, before turning on his heel, and leaving the room, slamming the door and splintering the wood. Isabelle huffed dramatically, and Clary rolled her eyes.
"Look, I know you love Jace with every fibre of your being etcetera, etcetera, but I'd probably stay away from him for a while." She tried to correct her phrasing when she noticed the shocked look plastered across Clary's face, "Until this whole heavenly fire stuff is cleared up that is."
Clary stopped spinning her stele for a moment, seeming to consider Isabelle's proposition. "I don't think I can do that Izzy. After everything that's happened, all I want is to be with him - I have given myself to him completely, I can't even consider being without him."
Immediately, Izzy giggled in the first time in what felt like months.
"Given yourself to him' huh? I thought you said you hadn't gone that far yet?" She smirked broadly, laughing harder when she saw the look of shock and embarrassment in her kind-of-friends eyes.
Clary began to stammer and stutter, but eventually, she managed to form the words "Th-that's so not what I meant!"
After watching Clary's embarrassment begin to ebb away, Izzy burst into an even louder chorus of laughter, and was joined by Clary soon after.
Isabelle had never taken the time to really talk with Clary: When she had first met her, Izzy had kind of disliked her because she'd never been around girls her age before, and she always saw Clary as kind of hostile, but they seemed to be getting closer and closer recently.
Izzy wasn't sure she was comfortable with that just yet.
"Well, my offer is still open from all those months ago" Isabelle said with a wink.
"What offer?" Clary asked innocently. By the angel Izzy thought; Clary was really slow on the uptake today.
"If you and Jace decide to completely ignore my advice, and you need a... some protection... my doors always open"
At this, Clary appeared more uncomfortable that ever, shuffling in her seat, and dropping her stele completely.
"Thanks Iz, but no thanks. Anyway, I've got to get to the training room." She managed to laugh, obviously not feeling as confident as she looked.
Clary then got out of her seat, retrieved her fallen stele, and left the room, closing the door quietly.
"Sure" Izzy said, not seeming to be able to rid the grin practically stretching from one of her ears to the other.
