CHAPTER 15 – INFIRMARY

“Isabelle, get up off the floor and help me carry your brother to the infirmary. Robert, make sure Jace doesn’t run off anywhere, and bring him with us.” Maryse commanded, instantly taking control of the situation, as usual. Maryse was often extremely tolerant of Jace’s behaviour, but after she had seen both her son and her daughter covered in blood, surely she would have yelled, Jace thought.

Robert walked over to Jace, and rested a hand on his shoulder.

“Come on Jace, you split your knuckles and their bleeding pretty badly.” Robert guided Jace out of the room after Maryse, who was already halfway down the hall.Next to her, Isabelle was limping, but still carrying her older brother, bridal style, towards the Infirmary.

Even once they had reached the infirmary, Alec had not regained consciousness, for which Jace was thankful for.

Jace knew he had been over-reacting by cracking Alec’s knuckle against the wall, but he still felt a deep rage within him, which was entirely directed at Alec. There was no denying the satisfaction Jace felt when he heard the crunch of snapping bones, then watching Alec curl up into a ball, like a child afraid of lightning

“Sit down here, just for a bit.” Robert told Jace, snapping him out of his reverie.

Alec had been put onto the first bed of the infirmary, Isabelle on the second, and Jace on the third. In turn, Marse had gone up to each of them and used a stele to draw iratzes on their wounds.

She spent a lot of time ‘repairing’ Alec, and Jace smiled, knowing Maryse stood no chance of fixing everything that was wrong with Alec. His big forehead was going to be tricky...

At some point during the healing process, Alec returned to the consciousness and tried to get up. Once he’d put pressure on his hand, he passed out again, causing the smirk already plastered on Jace’s face to widen. He didn’t regret anything. When Marse reached Jace, he looked up mournfully into her eyes.

“You’re not even going to ask me why I attacked your children?” He asked.

“No, because you’re going to tell everybody later at the meeting.” Maryse replied calmly.

“So you don’t even want to know what happened to Clary?” Jace questioned, instantly becoming suspicious due to the lack of any interrogation.

“No, Jace. You will be explaining to Jocelyn and Luke later about how her daughter is nowhere to be found, and how you are ultimately responsible.” Maryse replied, without a hint of emotion in her voice. Her piercing blue eyes seemed almost to multiply the guilt already raging in the pit of Jace’s stomach.

There was one thing Jace was certain of: He didn’t have time to wait for the Clave’s approval to go find Clary. He didn’t want to face Clary’s parents. He didn’t want to lose Clary – He couldn’t.

He wouldn’t.
