CHAPTER 3 – PROBLEMS
SIMON
*You there yet?*
*Just round the corner, should I grab us a table?*
*Booth, 2 steaks, rare for me, medium for Maia*
Simon shoved his ancient cell phone into his coat pocket, and pulled his hood up to protect himself from the worst of the rain. Sure, he couldn’t feel the cold, but he still wasn’t fond of being soaked.
The streets weren’t particularly busy at this time of day as most people were at work and had just got off their lunch break. Simon’s vampirism had greatly enhanced his senses, namely his sense of smell, making the sweet odour of burnt sugar all the more prominent, alongside the metallic, torturous scent of blood. Always blood.
As he approached the entrance of Taki’s, he removed his leather coat, and stuffed it into his satchel. He smiled at the recollection of Izzy calling it a man purse, and strode inside the dimply lit restaurant.
The interior of the restaurant faintly reminded him of Pandemonium – the entire room was lit by blue wall lamps, stationed above every booth.
A waitress strode over to assign him a table, and it took a moment for Simon to recognise her. After noticing her bright green veins and full blue eyes, Simon remembered that her name was Kaelie. Izzy had mentioned that she was half- nixie, but Clary had called her something else, maybe a pixie.
Mid-ponder, Kaelie asked him “Table for 1 is it vampire?”
“No, I’ve got more coming,” he chuckled, “Table for four please” Kaelie strode on ahead of him, guiding him to a booth, before placing both menus and cutlery for four on the table. After taking Simons order, she left with a quick curtsy.
Only moments later, Jordan pushed passed the Ifrits guarding the door and meandered into the restaurant. Behind him followed Maia and Isabelle. Isabelle was wearing a low cut black dress, somewhat casual attire compared to her usual extravagant fashion sense. She looked beautiful as always.
Seeming to notice Simon staring at her, she asked “What? Is my outfit okay? I lent all my gear to Clary so I got stuck with this but I figured I could just-“
Simon silenced her by kissing her gently, drawing the attention of Jordan and Maia who were sitting across from them.
Just as Isabelle began to deepen the kiss, Jordan coughed loudly and said “Ehem Si? Wouldn’t it be better to eat some food rather than, yaknow, Izzys face?” Maia choked on her drink of lemonade Kaelie had brought by, without Simon even noticing. Reluctantly, Simon untangled his hand from Izzys hair as she shuffled around uncomfortably in her seat.
“Oh, food’s here” Maia said, trying to rid the air of awkwardness looming over the table.
Kaelie brought over the food, and placed the orders in front of the group: Steaks, rare and medium rare for Jordan and Maia, a glass of AB blood for Simon, and a salad for Izzy. She had made a few stabs at conversation with Jordan, however Isabelle’s idea of a conversation always included demons, fighting or shadowhunter gossip. Amidst the clatter of knives and forks, conversation began to settle on the subject they had called his “meeting” for: Alec.
“What are we gunna do guys? Alec has barely come out of his bedroom since the breakup; he hasn’t trained, he’s hardly talked or done anything other than eat, sleep and go the bathroom,” Isabelle frowned, “He’s my brother, so it’s my job to get him to stop moping and help him get over Magnus”
Simon waited a few seconds before interjecting. “Well maybe we don’t have to help him get over him…?” He suggested, earning a puzzled look from Izzy.
“Ah, nice thinking vampire” Jordan smirked at him, causing Maia to replicate Isabelle’s quizzical expression.
“Okay guys, we don’t speak teenage boy, we have no idea what you’re talking about” Izzy complained, drumming her fingers against the table impatiently.
“Well, we could always try and get them back together?” Simon suggested, wiping the looks of Izzy and Maia’s faces, only to be replaced with uncertain glances.
“Don’t you think he should try to move forward rather than keep moving ba-“
“Magnus still loves Alec, Izzy, he just doesn’t forgive Alec for what happened with Camille. If we can get Magnus in a room with Alec or something, maybe they can talk it out?” Simon butted in. Everyone seemed pretty keen on the idea, except for Maia, who was staring sadly out of the front window of the restaurant.
“There’s just one problem with that plan guys…” She said sombrely.
At that moment, a high pitched bell sounded, indicating that a new customer had entered. Simon, Izzy and Jordan spun around to look at the new arrival: Magnus.
But the warlock was not alone. He was hand in hand with a young girl with pale pink skin, piercing yellow eyes, and brown hair which fell down to her waist. She was running her hands through Magnus’s hair, whilst laughing at something he had just said. He kissed her on the cheek before taking off her coat and handing it to Kaelie, who was also staring at the couple.
“Yeah,” Simon said, “That might be a problem”.
