CHAPTER 7 – CHANGE OF PLANS
CLARY
Clary awoke the next morning to find a note from Isabelle stuck on her forehead. Peeling it off drowsily, Clary read it.
*You fell asleep so I left you to it. Jace asked me to tell you to meet him in the training room as soon as you could. Remember my little present is in the bathroom cabinet. Be safe ;) Izzy*
She laughed to herself cheerfully, then practically rolled out of bed and pulled on a pair of jeans and a plain black tank top.
She walked into the bathroom and opened her bathroom cabinet, then grabbed her hairbrush, noticing a small packet behind it. She actually did it. Clary thought to herself, shoving the packet further back into the cabinet. I’m sixteen, Clary thought. Still underage, so I won’t be needing this.
Returning her attention to the brush in her hand, Clary pulled it through her red curls and winced at the pain of the brush ripping through her matted hair. Abandoning the idea of just brushing, Clary removed her clothes and got into the shower, hoping to loosen the knots sleep had woven into her locks.
After drying her hair and applying the smallest amount of mascara and lipgloss, Clary left her room, and headed to the kitchen. She made a quick bowl of cheerios, splashed on some milk, then sat down to enjoy her breakfast. The time was only 7:30AM, and the Institute was silent around her.
After finishing her meal, Clary put the bowl in the sink and headed to the training room. Along her way, she noticed Church scratching at Alec’s door – Alec would never admit it, but he had a very close bond with animals.
When Clary reached the training room door, she slowly creaking it open. Clary noticed the lights were all off inside, yet she could hear the slow breathing of another person, directly in front of her.
“Jace?” Clary asked, fear already eminent in her tone.
“Hey Clary.” Jace replied, instantly undoing the knots of fear already tying in the pit of her stomach.
“Why are the lights off?” Clary asked innocently, “I thought we were meant to be training today?” She felt Jace’s hand intertwine with hers.
“There’s been a… change of plans,” Jace answered quickly. Too quickly, Clary thought suspiciously. “We’re going to the greenhouse instead, come on.” Jace told her, gripping her right hand forcefully.
Thanks to the lack of lighting in the room, Clary managed to fumble her hand onto the light switch, and flicked it quickly. As light flooded her eyes, she noticed Jace’s dishevelled appearance and his frantic expression. He was blocking her view of the training room, obscuring all the equipment and apparatus behind him. Painfully, Jace gripped her by the shoulders and spun her around, holding the door open for her.
“Time to go Clary” Jace told her authoritatively, forcing Clary’s body through the door. Once they were both outside the training room, Clary whipped her head back around, only to catch a glimpse of the now illuminated training room.
She noticed that all the apparatus had been vandalized – all of the poles, mats, ladder rungs and surfaces had been carved into, with a single word repeating everywhere she looked: Erchomai.
Jace instantly tightened his grip on her shoulder, and slammed the door shut behind them, forcefully leading Clary down the hallway. The greenhouse, Clary remembered, was on the opposite end of the Institute – the furthest room away from the training room.
