 CHAPTER 61 – "NOTHING"

 CLARY

“We can’t portal in here, Sebastian will be able to trace it,” Jace says, throwing his arms in the air in frustration, pacing back and forwards in front of the bed. The idea of running away from Sebastian and his gang is thrilling... but there’s a part of me that feels tied here. To Sebastian.

My emotions have been messed with so many times, it feels like their on a rollercoaster. First, I remember everyone back at the Institute, then, my mind says I love Sebastian, but that was only because of the rune. More recently, I realised I don’t remember Jace, then got injected with the demon blood, and hated Sebastian and Jace. Now... role reversal: I think I love Jace, and I hate Sebastian.

But I still don’t fully remember Jace. I’m certain I did though, once, so I’m going to go with that.

“Clary? Were you listening?” Jace asks, and I realise his hands are on my shoulders, drawing my attention to him.

“Sorry, I’ve got kinda a lot on my mind...” I trail off, losing myself in Jace’s perfect, entrancing golden eyes. Nodding slowly, Jace removes his hands from my shoulders as he sends me a sympathetic look.

I didn’t ask me to step away from me, I think, realising just how dependant I am on Jace’s touch. The action feels so familiar, and even though Jace is nearly a stranger to me, I feel so comfortable around him that I must know him.

“I said,” Jace soothes, turning back to me, “We’re on the third floor, so we’re too high to jump. You know this place better than I do, can you direct us out of here?”

“I kind of know the way out,” I answer, running through the layout of the building in my head and deciding upon a destination.

“Okay, let’s go,” Jace smiles, reaching to hold my hand in his. His hands are always warm, and are nearly twice the size of my own, small hands.

I open the door with my spare hand and poke my head out into the hallway, breathing a sigh of relief once I know it’s clear.

Pulling Jace to follow after me, I practically tip-toe down the hallway to the left to minimize the amount of noise we make. Jace is completely silent in his movements, even without a soundless rune.

“This way,” I whisper, pointing straight down the hallway towards a spiral staircase. Tenebris harena is basically one large hotel, its walls lined with old painting, fireplaces with flower vases on top, and weapons lining the wall.

Motioning to a sword display attached to the red painted walls, Jace steps forward and yanks both of the swords from their holsters, handing one towards me cautiously.

The blade is short, but incredibly sharp, and a strange purplely-blackish colour, glinting slightly in the reflection of the light. Adjusting the sword in my grip, my eyes are drawn to the handle, that is embezzled with small pieces of crystal, aligned to form a star shape.

“It’s a Morgenstern blade,” Jace breathes, seemingly fascinated with his.

With this new knowledge, I grip the sword with more confidence. This sword belongs to me, I recite to myself, over and over again in my head until I’ve satisfied myself. If at all possible, we should be able to get out of the building without spilling blood, but by the look in Jace’s eyes, I can tell he won’t be too reluctant to take casualties.

Continuing down the halls, I quickly shove Jace against the wall and into an alcove concealed by shadows as I hear footsteps down the hall.

Hidden by the darkness, we both watch as a group of four Infernal Shadowhunters race down the hall, all calling to each other.
