CHAPTER 42 – Tenebris Harena

Clary dreamt.

Her dream began in the training room at the Institute.

A boy with golden hair and beautiful eyes was pinning her against the wall, but not in anger. His lips ravaged hers feverishly, and Clary found herself looping her fingers through the loops of his belt, pulling her towards him.

Slowly, the first scene of her dream faded out, and she was pulled into another, more intimate one.

She and the boy were sitting cross legged in a field of flowers that were gently swaying in the summer breeze. Pencil in hand, Clary pointed down to the book in front of her and filled in a picture of a flower, shading along the stem lightly. In front of her was a large pile of flowers they had gathered, which the boy was fiddling with.

“What’s this one called?” The blonde haired boy had asked, his enticing golden eyes looking lovingly into hers.

“Clary Sage,” Clary replied, writing her own name down in the book.

“It’s beautiful,” The boy soothed, looking at the flower, then returning his gaze to hers, “Just like you.”

Their hands were intertwined, and she didn’t ever want to let go.

“Jace....” She began.

Once again, her dream shifted until she saw nothing at all, but she could hear some distorted bits of speech around her.

“I don’t belong to you. I belong to me.” Her own voice spat.

“I think you know better than that,” Another voice retorted. Sebastian.

“You don’t love me!” Clary heard herself yell.

“And you don’t care that I’m your brother. I know how you felt about Jace, even when you thought he was your brother. You can’t lie to me.” Sebastian’s voice growled.

Suddenly, her sense of sight returned to her, and she saw herself, pinned beneath Sebastian, whose hands roamed forcefully across her pale skin. His clothes were drenched in his own blood, and Clary’s, and glass was strewn across the floor around them.

Looking at herself, Clary saw herself covered in open wounds and bruises, her hair matted, her cheeks red, her body looking broken.

“Jace is better than you.” Clary retorted quickly, instantly defending her soul mate.

“No one’s better than me,” Sebastian grinned, flashing his venomous grin, “A garden enclosed is my sister, a spring shut up, a fountain sealed. But not anymore, right? Jace took care of that.” She saw Sebastian’s fingers stop at her waistband, fumbling with the buttons on her jeans.

Instinctively, Clary grabbed a shard of glass and cut his shoulder, sending him jumping up.

Again, she dug the glass into his knee, and then drove her elbow into his throat. He tumbled to the side, choking, and she quickly pinned him to the floor, ready to slam the shard of bloody glass into his neck..

He was laughing. He lay under her, and he was laughing, his laughter vibrating up through her own body. His skin was spattered with blood—her blood, dripping down on him, his own blood where she had cut him, his silver-white hair matted with it. He let his arms fall to either side of him, outstretched like wings, a broken angel, fallen out of the sky.

He said, “Kill me, little sister. Kill me, and you kill Jace, too.”

Clary awoke violently, but refused to open her eyes. Her head was tucked into the chest of a cold figure, who she couldn’t determine without giving away her position.
