CHAPTER 38 – WHAT DOES IT SAY?

Isabelle flopped onto her bed and drew out her cell phone. Even during Clary’s trial, she had been thinking about Simon, despite her conscience telling her to feel guilty. She’d make sure to tell Simon about the verdict in the nicest way possible; she got that he and Clary were best friends, so the news was undoubtedly going to be hard to deliver.

Izzy took a few calming breaths before dialling Simon’s number. By now, she knew it off by heart. Simon answered 3 rings later, his voice thick and raspy with sleep. Isabelle loved that voice.

“Hey Iz, what up?” He asked politely, sounding as if he was willing himself not to go back to sleep. Raziel, he was cute.

“Hi Simon, I just wanted to call and see if everything’s okay,” Isabelle lied. It wasn’t technically lying, Isabelle thought – just... momentarily concealing the truth.

“Yeah everything’s cool, I had band practice after you left, and I was totally wiped out so I went home – well, Rebecca’s house.” For a moment, Isabelle’s heart raced at the thought of Simon round another girls house, but it slowed once she remembered that Rebecca was Simon’s sister. Ever since Simon had become  a vampire, his mother had gone bat-shit crazy on him, so he’d had to stay either at his mundie-friends house, or Rebecca’s.

“I’m sorry, if your too tired I can call back later?” Isabelle asked innocently.

“Chill Izzy, it’s fine, I love talking to you.”

...

“Okay, what aren’t you telling me?” Simon pressed, already identifying the silence as one for procrastinating.

“Nothing...” Isabelle squeaked. Izzy had never been a good liar around Simon; her voice always went so pitchy that she might as well hold a sign saying she was lying.

“Iz. It’s fine, tell me,” Simon cooed, causing Isabelle to sigh in annoyance as he seemed to pull the truth out of her.

“Clary’s trial didn’t go so great...”
“Oh?” Simon questioned, his voice dropping.

“The new consul and inquisitor were way too harsh. She is exiled from the Clave and is to be killed on sight, or else, basically.”
Again, silence deafened her down the line.

“Say something,” Isabelle begged.

“... So what you’re saying is that Clary did get charged for assisting Sebastian?”
Isabelle hummed yes.

“Are they sure?” Simon sounded frantic now, and Isabelle could practically hear him pacing back and forth. His voice was no longer sleepy, but angry and impatient.

“Si, they had pictures of Clary kissing Sebastian in some closet.”
The silence almost pained Isabelle.

“How did Jace handle it?” Simon asked slowly, referring to Jace as if he was a ticking time bomb.

“Stormed out. Haven’t seen him since.” Isabelle had never noticed Jace had been missing for hours now. After he had ran out of the Hall of Accords, Alec and her mother had ordered her not to follow, even though her first instinct was to do so.

“Are you coming home soon?” Simon whined, as Isabelle picked at the beads on her black pillow.

“Yeah, we’re coming home first thing tomorrow, that is, when we find Jace. He’d kill us if we left without him.” Isabelle heaved herself up off the bed and walked to Jace’s bedroom, fiddling with her phone as she went.

“Have you checked his bedroom?” Simon asked.
“On my way there now.”
Isabelle stopped outside the door, then swung it open, not bothering to knock. Jace’s bedroom was untouched, the bed still made, curtains still drawn.

“He there?” Simon asked hopefully

“No...” Isabelle murmured, before locking her eyes on the windowsill, and the crumpled piece of paper lying there. Picking it up, Isabelle examined it sceptically.

“What’s wrong? Did you find something?” Simon stammered quickly, tripping over the words.

“Yes...” Isabelle whispered, explaining what she had found to Simon.

“What does it say?” Simon asked.
