CHAPTER 63 – FOR ETERNITY

 JACE

Stepping through the portal, I breathed a sigh of relief that Clary hadn’t taken us anywhere too conspicuous. We’d been waiting in the Bone City for another 10 minutes, before following Sebastian and the Infernal Shadowhunters down a corridor, where they disappeared altogether. We searched around for ages, looking for any sign of them, but there were no signs they had even come down this corridor at all.

Being completely unsure where to go, Clary suggested we portal to Idris, so here we are.

As my surroundings solidify around me, I can’t help but trip backwards. I’ve never been good at portal travel; I always end up with a headache, or lose my balance completely.

It’s my only weakness... aside from ducks.

 Man, I hate ducks.

Instead of hitting the cold, cobblestone floor of Angel Square, I land on a comfortable sofa, inside the Penhallows house. We had stayed at the Penhallows once before, the first time Clary came to Idris, so the surroundings were familiar to us both.

“Why’d you take us here?” I ask her, slowly and reluctantly pulling myself off of the bed. Purely out of habit, I flattened the already wrinkled cushion quickly.

“It’s the place I remember most in Idris. I guess... I can’t shake the memories from my head,” Clary replied, sending a stab of guilt digging into the pit of my stomach.

This room. This was the room Clary walked in on me and Aline.

“Clary, I’m-“ I begin, finding my voice catching in my throat, before Clary turned to face me directly, her eyes instantly soothing mine.

“Jace, I might not remember everything, but I know I forgave you for it, so let’s not say anything more about it.”

Feeling like I’ve just been scolded by a strict parent, I nod my head and bite my lip, before walking over to the window, wanting to shut the curtains.

Grabbing the thick blackout-curtains in my fist, I catch a quick glimpse of Angel Square below us.

“Shit...” I mutter, instantly feeling Clary’s nervous presence behind mine.

“What is it?” She asks in a desperate attempt to get around my body. I don’t know why, but I don’t think she should see this. Despite my efforts, Clary crawls past me and stands up between my arms, looking down at the street below.

Her eyes widen at the sight of the Infernal Shadowhunters, rhythmically beating their feet against the cobblestone, staring blankly forward like zombies.

Shadowhunters mill about aimlessly, most likely unfamiliar with the feeling of being trapped. Nobody dares to address Sebastian’s men and women; even I can tell who’d win in that fight.

“So I guess this is where they went...” Clary mutters under her breath, her eyes never breaking from the scene below her.

Just as I am about to encourage her to look away, a loud voice sounds in the street below.

“Men and women of Idris! Sons and daughters! Assemble in Angel Square, or the marginally less merciful Infernal’s will drag you out of your homes, and will not be afraid to snap your necks!” The voice answers, and by the look in Clary’s eyes, she recognises Sebastian’s voice as well.

I notice there are many other houses like ours, windows half open as people peek through, wanting to catch a glimpse of Valentines Son. Intakes of breath sound around the crowd of 60-70 shadowhunters huddling together in the square.
