CHAPTER 47 - AND THEN

CLARY

(Another short one, maybbbeee triple update? Because exams are a downer, and fanfic writing's fun, hopefully readings fun too :)

The pain keeps me from being unconscious too long. I drift in an out, ripped to and from consciousness, feeling as if my insides were being ignited with a thousand flames. And poison. And spikey things.

In general however, the pain has subsided greatly, but I can’t help but panic to notice my hands are tying me down to a cold metal slab.

Barely managing to lift my head up to look, I notice that the veins in my arms practically protrude from the skin, and are a distinctive black colour. My hands are shaking off their own accord, and my neck feels almost as if it is pulsating, and I am thankful that I can’t look at it.

I hear the door open and hear 5 sets of feet clicking against the marble floor. Around me, I see Sebastian, Seth, Amelia, Felix and Jace, looking down at me as if I was some kind of science experiment.

“Her eyes are still funny,” Felix remarked, looking at me quizzically. I instantly feel self conscious.

“What’s wrong with my eyes?” I ask, only to find that no sound comes out. I try again, then begin to panic as I try to force myself to make a sound.

“Don’t,” Sebastian advised me scornfully, “The demon poison interferes with your entire body, controlling whatever it wants to. Right now, it’s destroying your vocal chords.” Destroying my vocal chor-

“Do something then!” Jace yelled, slamming his fist against the edge of my ‘bed’.

“It’s not worth it yet,” Sebastian faced Jace, “If it starts to do more damage, then we’ll need to medicate. The rebirth will have to take place right here, should things get any worse.”

Various discouraging comments sounded around the room, advising Sebastian not to go through with whatever this ‘rebirth’ was, but he didn’t reply, ignoring the comment. I wanted to yell at him not to give me this ‘rebirth’, because my mum had always told me never to agree with things unless you knew what they were, and I certainly didn’t know what this ‘rebirth’ was.
Jace sighed and ran a hand through his hair in a frustrated manor, looking over me with such concern I felt like crying. After what had happened in the arena, it hurt to look at him, for fear that he would sink his teeth into me and do what he did last time.

It wasn’t him, my subconscious reminded me, but I think if you had the opportunity, you’d go through all the pain again, just to be that close with him again. I tried to silence my mind. I love Sebastian. I love Sebastian. I loved Sebastian.

For a minute or two, Seth, Amelia and Felix muttered to each other; deep in conversation, while Sebastian tried to make light attempts at conversation, which Jace denied angrily.

Now was not the time for chatting about the weather! In movies, this was the time where doctors were attaching wires into me, hooking me up to a heart monitor, giving me sedatives, not complaining about the rain. I tried to distract myself for a while, keeping my mind as busy as possible.

Then I felt my eyes begin to sting.

At first, I tried to blink it out, but that seemed to make the problem worse. Frantically, I tugged on my chains, desperate to rub my eyes as I moaned in frustration. As the moment went by, the pain increased tenfold, until a black liquid began to seep into one of my eyes, covering the pupil, submerging me into darkness in one eye.

As I screamed, Jace’s breathing increased. “Sebastian I’m serious! It’s spreading, you need to do something!” Within seconds, my other eye filled with the black inky substance, blinding me.

“HELP ME!” I screamed, having somehow regained the control of my vocal chords. I began to cry, my strangled tears mixing with the black liquid, doubling the amount blocking my vision.

“It will pass!” Sebastian yelled at Jace, who was frantically calling for help.

“Does it look like it will –ahhhhPASS?” I screamed, feeling a cold substance run out of my ears, then my nose, then my mouth. The entire room took in a breath, each barking orders at one another, unsure of who was actually in control of the situation. I began to choke on the foul liquid in my mouth, and sound was slowly being blocked out by the same substance pouring out of my ears. I was going to die.

I barely heard someone yell “Thank god, give me the cup, we’re performing the rebirth now!”
“You can’t! The infernal cup won’t cure her, it will make her worse!”
“Then increase the dosage Spencer!” A voice roared to her right.

A second later, I felt a sharp prick in the crook of my elbow, and felt a needle seeming another, warmer liquid into my veins.

My throat closed up.

My heartbeat slowed.

My mind cleared.

Then my heart stopped.
