CHAPTER 48 – RED
JACE
Then my heart stopped.
Clary’s eyes shut slowly, and her chest ceased its constant, reassuring rise and fall, and her hands fell back against the metal.
“Clary?” I asked, jumping forward, fighting to push past Sebastian, who had made her way in front of him. “CLARY!” I roared, my fists making contact with anyone in my path, thankfully Sebastian.
As I ran my hand through her hair, I tried to pry her eyes open, only to have them fall shut again quickly. Her beautiful, beautiful green eyes were hidden from me, refusing to open, and I took a deep breath before pressing my fingers to the most prominent vein of her neck – the one that was now adorned with 8 small puncture marks.
I heard a dull explosion in the back of my head as I frantically searched for a pulse, finding nothing in return.
“This is all your fault!” I scream at Sebastian, who is wiping a line of blood from his spit lip. “If you’d just listened when I said to do something before it got worse, Clary wouldn’t be dead!” My heart raced as I felt the heavenly fire inside me itch out to shock something.
“I made a judgement call Jace! If anything, it’s your fault for distracting me!” Sebastian retorted, his fists pushing at my shoulders.
“MY FAULT!?” I roar, my voice shaking horrendously, though I made no effort to conceal it. Look at her! She’s dead because of you!”
I rest my hand over her heart to iterate my point, instead feeling the heavenly fire coursing through me double as I shocked her.
Then I felt something.
A faint something.
But a something.
“...Clary?” I whisper, lowering the side of my head to her chest, definitely hearing a beat.
“Praise the Angel!” I yell, barely containing my relief as I fought the urge to jump up and down.
Clary opened her eyes slowly, revealing not her usual bright green eyes, but determined, deep red ones, the colour of blood.
“Get these off me,” Clary spat, regarding the chains binding her to the table.”
Her tone, frankly, scared me. Gone was the nervous, caring, shy girl that had been struck down by a demon – a demon with my face.
Nervously, Amelia stepped forwards and released her of her bindings, watching cautiously as Clary rubbed her wrists, sitting on the edge of her bed, her legs dangling off carelessly.
“Clary, you really shouldn’t stand up yet, you’re not ready to-“ Amelia began shyly.
“Shut up,” Clary spat, shoving Amelia by the shoulders, sending her sprawling into Seth, who caught her quickly.
“What’s your problem Clary?” Seth pestered, advancing towards her bravely.
“What my problem?” She scoffed, “Well, I seem to remember you guys letting me die. So forgive me, I’m pretty pissed.” Her red hair blazed brightly, flowing down her shoulders like a wild beast. Her back was turned to me, and as much as I wanted to run over to her, I held my ground, unsure of what the heck was going on.
“So, does anyone else have a problem with my attitude?” Clary snarled, turning on her heel towards me. Then, she smiled. At me.
“Jace,” She purred, her adorable smile not matching her eyes, “I’ve missed you so much!” i barely stopped myself from picking her up as she slunk over to me, her beauty freezing me to the spot. My heart nearly stopped when Clary pressed her petite frame up against my chest as she stood on her tiptoes and kissed me.
Kissed. Me.
My heart was pounding in my chest as I ran a hand up into her hair, pulling her closer to me. She opened my lips with hers, taking control, seeming not to care that people were undoubtedly watching. Pulling back slightly, Clary snagged my lips between hers, biting gently, sending my mind spiralling in a thousand different directions.
“By the angel Clary, it’s you...” I whisper, so that only she could hear.
“And it’s you,” Clary replied quietly, when suddenly, a wicked grin covered her lips. “That’s the problem. You.”
“What?” I ask, before seeing Clary’s knee connect with my groin, sending me doubling over moaning.
Stepping closer, Clary roundhouse kicked me in the side, and I was thrown backwards into the wall. Despite my protests, Clary then crashed her elbow down into my face. She had definitely got stronger.
“What the fuck Clary?” I yell, removing my hand from my nose, which was now covered in blood.
“This is your fault!” She raged, the fire in her eyes blazing, and if looks could kill, I’d be dead, “You make me weak! You were the reason I got bit! You’re the reason I DIED Jace! I’m a strong shadowhunter now, but you’re the one thing holding me back! The demon was right, I do care about you, but I hate you for it! I don’t even know who the hell you are for Angel’s sake!”
Her rant stopped me in my tracks. Before I had time to process any of what she had just said, Sebastian stepped forward to interject.
“Hey Clary, I missed you too, can I get one?” He smirked sultrily at her. To my content, she snapped her elbow into his face as well.
“You can zip it too Sebastian. I hate you both for what you’ve done to me.” Her words were like venom, burning away all my senses until I was left battered and bruised.
“Fine,” Sebastian snarled back at her, “You’ve got a hell of a bad temper sis, I’ve got something to help with that.”
Clary straightened her posture immediately.
“Like I always say,” He began slyly. “When you’ve got a problem, you burn it down.”
