CHAPTER 19 – REVENGE
The room was in uproar. Jocelyn was yelling obscenities at Jace, who just stood in his spot, absorbing words her words; considering every insult, every sarcastic comment. Jocelyn looked at him as if he was something she had found under her shoe.
“I’m still waiting for you to deny it Jace! Can you look me square in the eyes and tell me you were ‘just talking’ to my daughter, and nothing else?” Jocelyn lowered her voice, sounding even more angry and dangerous than she did when she was shouting. Jace felt his face flush, and met Jocelyn’s eyes.
“We were just-“
“We’ve already wasted enough time on this Jocelyn, we must move on to the next point, it is already midnight.” Maryse surprised Jace by interrupting him. He would definitely have to thank her for that later.
“…but…” Maryse continued. Oh no. “You will be explaining why my son has 2 broken ribs and a fractured scaphoid.”
Jace stared at Alec, who he noticed was also staring back at him, as if to say ‘tell them, I dare you’. “Well I hit him, that’s why.” He heard Simon snigger in the corner of the room, and then saw Isabelle flick him on the forehead.
“And may I inquire as to why?” Maryse asked calmly.
“He called me, asking me to pick him up, so I left the room to talk to him on the phone. Because I left, Sebastian got into the room with Clary unnoticed. It’s him who should be on trial here, not me.” Jace spat, glaring at his parabatai the whole time.
“Although I believe your actions were rash, I do agree with your logic.” Maryse concluded.
“But mum-“ Alec whined, appearing both shocked and frustrated at the verdict handed down by his own mother.
“Silence Alexander.”
Satisfaction flooded Jace, and he made no attempt to hide his victorious smile, as he stared at Maryse, darting snide glances at Alec.
Maryse called everyone to order again, as they had just broken out into whispers and some snippets of laughter and mocking. Realising he was still standing up, Jace quickly returned to his chair, and stared at the ground.
“Does anyone have any suggestions as to how we rescue Clary from Sebastian?” She asked loudly, looking into everyone’s eye’s in turn.
To his surprise, an unfamiliar girl next to Magnus raised her hand eagerly. “Why does Clary have to be rescued? From what Magnus has told me, Clary is more than capable of handling herself.” Silence ran throughout the room.
“That’s not an option,” Jace began quickly, not bothering to raise his hand, “We all know what kind of things Sebastian is capable of. As far as we know, he still has the second Mortal Cup, and we all saw what that can do…” Jace trailed off, instantly realizing he had probably struck a nerve with Luke. Jace noticed that everyone in the room was now staring at Luke, who was now looking down uncomfortably. His sister, Amatis had been converted into Sebastian’s service by the cup, and was currently missing, missing most likely meaning with Sebastian. With Clary.
“Yeah, and from what Clary told me, Sebastian doesn’t see her as his sister, but as a potential lover.” Isabelle added. Potential lover? What did she mean by that?
“I mean that Sebastian has tried to have his way with Clary before.” Isabelle answered Jace’s question that he had apparently voiced out loud. Sebastian had tried to… No. Jace tried as hard as he could to push the mere thought out of his mind, but to no avail.
Much to Jace’s surprise, Aline interjected a comment. “We have to get Clary back, she’s a shadowhunter. When Jace went missing, you all know how Clary reacted; she didn’t sleep, she barely ate, until she went to Valentine’s apartment with them. She tried everything she could to get Jace back, even if it meant getting into the heart of Sebastians domain. Who, in here, could say that they never even considered the possibility that she was dead? I did, and I’m sure you did, and you, and you,” She pointed randomly to the others in the room, all captivated by Aline’s speech. “Surely, we owe Clary this, to repay her for all she did to help Jace? She was the only one who never gave up on Jace, so we can’t give up on her.”
The room remained silent as Aline shuffled around in her seat, seeming to regret everything she had said seconds before.
"All in favour of conducting an investigation, and rescuing Clarissa, please stand.” Maryse began, still sat in her seat at the time. Jocelyn, Jace, Simon and Aline were the first to stand up, swiftly followed by Isabelle, Luke, Jordan and Helene. Maryse and Robert rose to their feet seconds later, and then Magnus. The girl sat next to Magnus rose to her feet reluctantly. To Jace’s surprise, Alec groaned, then pulled himself out of his wheelchair, only to fall back down seconds later, yelling in pain.
“Then so we shall attempt to rescue Clarissa.” Maryse began, before walking out of the room. Everyone else began to head towards one exit or another. Jace sat back for a moment, watching the clusters of groups walking towards the exits, noticing Magnus link arms with the girl he was with. That’s new.
“Jace?” Jace spun around to find Jocelyn still seated, with Alec to her left, with a maniacal grin spreading across his face, lighting his eyes. Jace walked over slowly, sensing impending danger.
“Your friend Alec here has just reminded me of the phone-call you too had. He tells me that you were in bed with my daughter, and that apparently, his call ‘disrupted you’.” The calmness of Jocelyn’s voice terrified Jace, making his throat run dry.
“My daughter has morals Jace. Had morals, I should say. I only let her stay at the Institute because I was assured that you wouldn’t be able to touch her, but now, look at her! You’ve defiled her!”
Jace vaguely recalled Alec wheeling his chair away, as Jace barely contained the anger that coursed through him.
“She is underage Jace! My beautiful little girl, now living in sin with a womanizing beast! You’ve turned my daughter into a slut!” Jocelyn screamed, raising her hand in an attempt to slap Jace.
He gripped her hand just before it collided with his face, only to hear Jocelyn scream in pain. Smoke rose up from his hand, and he could faintly trace the smell of burned popcorn.
After heaving herself of the floor and flattening her hair, Jocelyn walked straight up to Jace, mere inches from his face.
“If, by some miracle, Clary comes out of this alive,” Jocelyn growled, “You are never going to be allowed near her again.”
