CHAPTER 64 - TO SLEEP, PERCHANCE TO DREAM

ALEC

It’s 10 minutes to four. In the morning, I might add.

Magnus, Isabelle, Jocelyn, Luke, Simon, Maia, Jordan and I were all sitting by one of the canals, staring at the reflective surface in a sort of dreamy way.

The amount of Shadowhunters in Angel Square had doubled since the first announcement – apparently, Sebastian had released a sort of calling symbol to all the shadowhunters in the New York area, claiming there was an emergency that needed to be dealt with.

Technically speaking, he wasn’t lying, Sebastian just didn’t mention that he was the emergency.

So now, shadowhunters and downworlders alike were crammed into every spare inch of space, all awaiting Sebastian’s call.

7 minutes to go.

When Jocelyn and Luke had come running through they had made, they’d had no idea what they were getting into. Magnus had broken the news to them about Clary and Jace’s excecution, and Jocelyn had been crying buckets ever since; even Luke looked misty eyed.

6 minutes to go.

At first, they’d tried to reason with Sebastian, who had walked about the square for a few minutes, flaunting his victory over everything that moved. A few brave – or reckless – shadowhunters had stabbed him, but Sebastian had lifted the daggers out as if they were splinters, with a look of disapproval masking his inner emotions.

The shadowhunters responsible had ended up dead.

5 minutes.

So now, we sat staring into the crystalline water, wondering how this could be happening to us. To Clary and Jace.

Everyone thought Sebastian adored Clary, but now? We had always known Sebastian was a psychopath, but murdering the sister he claimed to idolize... none of us could figure it out. Would they show up at the funeral? Surely not.

4 minutes.

We had been ordered to not search for them. Everyone was ordered to not leave their spot, but we had all managed to sneak off to the canals. There was no reason we should be here, just that it was a quiet, almost tranquil place to reflect, before everything went to hell.

3 minutes.

“IN THE SQUARE!” A loud voice boomed, the sound crackling slightly as it was transmitted through the demon towers. This is it, I thought, catching Isabelle’s gaze and holding her hand in mine. First we lost Max, now Jace and Clary.

And there was nothing we could do to stop it.

Trudging over to the square, time seemed to run slower, which, in theory, was a good thing. I noticed Isabelle throwing hasty glances at Simon, and I realised what she wanted. Right now, she wanted Simon, so I released my hold on her, allowing her to fall into step with Simon.

Eyeing Magnus carefully, I walked along side him, and my breath hitched as he quickly grabbed my hand, and for the first time, I could see genuine sorrow and fear in his eyes.

Assembling in the square, I filed in line with the rest of my friends and family, and faced towards the square, where a small staging area had been set up. It consisted of large oak wood planks and steps, leading up to a central stage illuminated by glowing red witchlight.

The stage backed onto the Lightwoods family home – my house.

On the stage stood Sebastian, wearing new, clean red gear, tight fitting and luxurious. His hair was no longer matted with blood, and he practically exulted confidence and smug charisma.
