CHAPTER 36 - CHAPERONE
CLARY
“Jace? Jace Wayland?” I asked, perching on the edge of a gravestone a few metres away than the man. The man had perfect blonde hair and a strong build, and looked familiar to her, but she couldn’t quite place why. Had he been at Devils Dice?
The man spun around in shock. His face was a lot younger than she had initially believed; he looked around 17, and was staring at her with the strangest look on his face. Sebastian had said the boy’s name was Jace Wayland, a fearsome shadowhunter belonging to the New York Institute. After a moment, Clary sighed when Jace still hadn’t replied.“Sorry, am I saying it right? Jace Wayland? Or is it more WayLAND?”
Apparently, she had said it right as the boy stampeded towards her, knocking over several gravestones in the process. Clary noticed his muscles flexing as his arms outstretched towards her. Before Clary could protest, the boy had scooped her up in his arms bridal style and was dancing around joyously. Clary clung onto his neck for dear life. For a moment, she laughed and seemed to melt against him, but then she quickly forced herself out of the embrace, landing on the floor in a precise crouch. What the hell?
“Clary? What’s the matter?” Jace asked, resting his hand on her shoulder, concern eminent in his tone.“What the heck is wrong with you, you creep!?” She yelled, and the boy seemed to break apart in front of her very eyes. His chest rose and fell slowly, and his face fell.
“...What? Clary, what’s going on?” Jace asked, his voice cracking on more than one occasion.
“How do you know my name?” Clary asked, taking a step backwards and tumbling over a gravestone, but before she hit the ground, he was there. Jace. She gasped before straightening up, but she noticed that she was in no hurry to be free of his touch.
“It’s me,” The boy purred, drawing her towards him. For a moment, Clary felt familiar with this movement, but only a second later, she had her palms flat against the boys chest, pushing him away. Again, the boys face dropped as he took a step back and ran his hand through his golden hair, locks tumbling atop his forehead, perfectly framing his angelic cheekbones.
“Sebastian warned me that you were crazy, but I didn’t think you were spectacularly out of your god damned mind!” Clary spat, straightening her dress that had folded at the hem during her fall. Out of the corner of her eye, Clary noticed the boy staring, wild eyed.
“Clary, this isn’t funny...” Jace paced back and forth, his hand rubbing at the back of his neck, a clear sign of stress. His slightly tanned skin shone in the dim light. When Clary had been observing him, it only just been getting dark, but her dress had absorbed the sunset’s light, casting a moonlit glow over the graveyard.
“Exactly what I was thinking, that wasn’t funny. Am I allowed to say what I came here for?” Clary asked, frowning angrily at the blonde. Jace nodded slowly.
“We need you to come with us.”
The boy craned his head forward in confusion, “Who’s we?”
Clary sighed impatiently. “Sebastian and I?” The boy’s eyes hardened in anger, and he crossed his arms across his chest.
