CHAPTER 23 – “THE YOUNG SHADOWHUNTER IN THE CORNER”

SIMON

“What’ll it be?” Kaelie asked him, then flicking her eyes to Isabelle reluctantly. Simon and Isabelle had decided on sitting at a table, rather than sit in their usual booth, which was currently taken.

“I’ll have some AB please and Izzy will have a salad,” Simon replied, smiling at Kaelie politely.

“Sure thing vampire,” Kaelie winked at him, then left to tend to other tables. Simon turned back around to find Izzy scowling, her gaze locked on the waitress. Her arms were crossed defensively, and she was taking deep breaths to calm herself.

“Iz?” Simon asked, “You okay?”

“Yeah fine” Izzy replied, still refusing to end her one-woman staring contest. Simon rested his elbows on the table, and then caressed Isabelle’s cheek, seeming to make the anger present inside of her flood away quickly.

“Tell me,” Simon cooed, staring deeply into her beautiful blue eyes.

Isabelle sighed before beginning her explanation, “Kaelie was totally flirting with you.”

Simons brow furrowed in confusion. Kaelie was flirting? With him?

“Yeah, she was using that stupid voice, then she flipped her hair, then she winked at you, then she-“ Isabelle cut herself off, sighing again. “I just wish I could tape a big sign to your head sometimes, to let everyone know I’m with you.”

Simon smiled, imagining the idea in his head. Izzy seemed to guess what he was thinking, and pinched his arm playfully “Not literally dummy.”

“Well there are other ways of showing everyone I’m with you,” Simon winked at her, and she raised her eyebrows, pretending to be clueless.

“Oh? And what ways are you talking about?”

Instead of replying, Simon leaned forward and met his lips with Izzy’s urgently, desperate to express all that he felt for her. Isabelle’s lips were soft and cool on his, making him wishing that they were in private, rather than in a restraint full of people surely staring.

When Simon had first become ‘official’ with Izzy, he was worried that she was embarrassed to be around him. Clary had told him he was being paranoid, but once Izzy had started buying him clothes with a different style, Simon began to get worried again. Now, however, he understood.

Izzy wasn’t known for being particularly faithful in relationships, but ever since she had been with Simon, she had changed a lot. She was more self-confident than usual, she knew the entire storyline of the Star Wars movies off by heart, and once, Simon had caught her wearing jeans and a T-shirt, rather than her usual “No less than six inches” shoes, and her fancy dresses. For all the effort Isabelle had put in for him, Simon figured he could return the favour.

Isabelle began to kiss Simon with more passion, and he heard somebody shout “A child of the night and a shadowhunter? Wow, things have changed.” They both ignored the couple.

“Ehem” Kaelie coughed, drawing Simon and Isabelle out of their public display of affection. He saw Izzy’s face flush with colour, and then laughed, frankly amused by the whole situation.

“Sorry,” Simon smirked, “My girlfriend and I just got a bit carried away.” Kaelie’s face twisted into one of intense jealousy, and she shot a strange look at Isabelle.

Out of the corner of his eye, Simon saw Isabelle looking triumphant.

“Pint of AB blood for vampire, salad for the girlfriend,” Kaelie scowled, before retreating into the kitchen.

“Thanks,” Isabelle smiled, picking away at a tomato on her plate. Simon was too drawn into his meal to even fathom a reply. As soon as his lips hit the clear glass, his blood hummed in anticipation. The metallic, sweet, addictive scent of blood filled his senses, sending him into a form of trance he endured whenever he saw blood. Everything else in the room seemed to fade except Simon and the blood.

Simon could wait no longer. He tilted his head back and downed half of the glass in a matter of seconds. The energy that burst within him was pleasant, yet not as pleasant as drinking from a human, and not an animal, whose blood was growing old. But blood was blood, and blood was good.

“Hey, Simon?” Isabelle asked as Simon’s senses returned to normal. She was staring at him as if he was something in a petri-dish.

“Yeah?” Simon asked, not bothering to conceal his fangs that retracted whenever he was around a meal.

“You’ve got a bit of...” Isabelle picked up the napkin that initially rested underneath the glass and dragged it around his lips and chin. The napkin came away stained red, and Simon felt embarrassment flood to his cheeks.

“Don’t worry about it,” Isabelle answered for him.

Looking to his left, Simon saw Kaelie approaching their table with another pint of blood in her hand.

“We didn’t order that,” Isabelle snapped quickly.

“Yeah, I got that sweetheart. The young, handsome man in the corner sent it, addressed to the vampire.” Kaelie set the glass on the table before turning around quickly, silencing Isabelle’s objection, and then headed out the back door of the restaurant.

Simon turned his head to the direction in which Kaelie had walked from, and found a young man sitting alone in the booth they usually sat in. Catching Simon’s gaze, the man inclined his head.

“You know, I’m not okay with guys hitting on you either,” Isabelle interrupted his thoughts, the angry look etched into her face again. Simon just laughed, and lifted up the glass, examining the contents. Spending time around shadowhunters had taught him to be suspicious of pretty much everything. After being satisfied with the safety of the glass, Simon raised it to his lips, then caught sight of the white napkin on the table, that was wrapped around the glass initially. He lifted it up, and saw the word “Sorrow” written in thin, slanted black ink. Flipping over the napkin, Simon saw a word with the same colour ink, penmanship and placement: “Death”.

After showing Isabelle the napkin, she pulled her cell phone out of her bag and said, “We better get the others over here. This could be something about Clary,” Simon nodded, before turning his head around.

The man in the booth was nowhere to be seen.
