Fitz stared at the Imparter in his hand. For the eleventh time that night he rehearsed what he would say in his mind. For the eleventh time that night, he opened his mouth to hail her. For the eleventh time that night his throat closed off. For the eleventh time that night, he hated himself for being unable to do it. But he couldn't.

It wasn't because he was afraid of being rejected. He couldn't care less about being rejected. No, he was afraid of ruining what he already had with her. Afraid that if he told her how he felt, she would want to end their friendship. Afraid that things would be too awkward after he told her he loved her.

If she felt the same way, it would be another story. But he'd hinted at it before in conversation, and she hadn't shown any sign of reciprocating his feelings.

Besides, she loved someone else. He saw it. Saw how she blushed when Keefe put his arm around her, how she looked at him, how she truly cared about him and put so much time and energy into making sure he was okay. Saw how she lit up when his name was mentioned.

For the twelfth time that night, he rehearsed what he would say in his mind. For the twelfth time that night he opened his mouth—

Sophie's face filled the screen of his Imparter.

"Hey."

He heard the word doubly, once from his Imparter and once from behind him. He turned to see her standing in the doorway.

"Hey."
