"Hi, Keefe."
It was Foxfire's first ever dance to celebrate the Neverseen being defeated. Biana and Fitz were off somewhere, their reputation restored after successfully destroying the Neverseen. Linh and Tam chose to keep to themselves, and Dex couldn't get away from whatever project the Black Swan had him working on. That meant that Sophie had been pretty much alone before Keefe found her.
"I see you've been social tonight," Keefe joked.
"Hey! I barely know anyone! A bunch of people have talked to me tonight, actually," Sophie defended herself.
After an awkward pause, Keefe asked, "Wanna dance?"
"What?"
"It's a dance. You wanna dance?"
"I—"
"I know you know how, from all those detentions. Come on, Foster."
"Fine."
Keefe led her to a corner of the dance floor, pulling her in close to him. After a while of quiet, Sophie asked him, "How are you?"
In the process of defeating the Neverseen, Keefe had had to watch his own mother die. Afterwards, however, he had been surprisingly fine. Sophie, of course, was skeptical, seeing it as a sign that he was getting closer to breaking.
"I'm fine, Foster. You worry too much."
They fell back into companionable silence, and, leaning her head against his chest, Sophie finally felt calm for the first time in almost a year.
