It had been five days since graduation day. You hadn't tried to communicate with me at all. In these five days, not a minute went by when I didn't regret that evening.
But apart from regret, I was also confused about your reaction. Why didn't you just say 'no'? I replayed that moment in my mind over and over, your last words to me echoing through, trying to make sense of it but I never made any progress.
I looked outside and noticed it was raining. It reminded me of the time when I made you jump around in the rain with me. It was the moment I fell in love with you.
I heaved an exhausted sigh and got up. I had decided to take a walk in the city to calm my restless mind. "Maybe the rain will wash away my sorrows." I had thought.
I dragged my feet towards the market, looking around, taking in the busy chatter of people and vehicles combined with the tranquility of rain. I chuckled to myself at this peculiar juxtaposition watching the world pass by as I stood still on the sidewalk, cozy under my umbrella.
Just then I focused on the other side and gasped inaudibly. I contemplated running away immediately as there you were standing under the shade in front of a shop looking for a way to get home without getting wet.
You saw me too the very next moment. You waved at me but I stood still. Why were you pretending everything was alright between us?I was confused and frankly, a little annoyed.
You swiftly crossed the road and walked over to me.
"Hey, Kira. Can I...umm...share your umbrella?" You hesitated while asking.
I stared at you in surprise since you had never called me by my first name before.
"Uh...sure." I replied after a momentary pause and we started walking together. I wondered if you wanted to say something but we kept walking quietly for about five minutes.
You suddenly stopped catching me off guard. I looked at you with quizzical eyes.
"I'm sorry, " you began,"for leaving like that the other day."
You paused for me to respond but I remained quiet. You then continued, "The truth is, when you confessed to me, it caught me off-guard and I didn't want to say anything that would hurt you..." you paused again, "I have been thinking about it a lot and I have an answer now." Your voice lowered and you came closer. I looked at you inquisitively again and found you returning a soft gaze.
You put your hand on my cheek and pulled me closer. I did not resist and closed my eyes. Your lips touched mine and every sound around me faded except the sound of raindrops colliding against the umbrella. I finally let go of it and put my arms around your neck, both of us now drenched in the rain.
We broke apart, I looked up at you, with heated up cheeks, and found you looking at me with a loving smile.
"I'm really sorry." You whispered as you pulled me in your embrace.
"It's okay." I mumbled as I wrapped my arms around you once again.
