Chapter 14: Surprises

I had finally finished healing my ankle. Baba was helping to put me into a tight corset in the bedroom. Neither of us had really spoken much. Everyone had been kind of quiet around me since the incident except for the Doctor and Cadeth.

The Doctor, spending an unnecessarily large amount of time teasing me for getting attacked by a "Venom Synth", as he called the creature. When I asked for more details on why he found it so entertaining, like Cadeth, the Doctor told me to just go to the library.

I was too busy though. On Earth I didn't find any solace in books as I tried to survive, and right now, what I must do is survive. Persevere and push onward. I needed to focus on the present and what I can do to prevent future problems first, later I could learn the minute details. At least, that's the feelings and thoughts which subdued my fear as I continued to go with the flow of this new life forced on me.

I was planning on going outside today and mapping out the gate with Baba's help. Cadeth had told me I didn't need to, and that the guards should be able to know automatically when I'm passing it, but I didn't want to take any chances. Baba understood. In responding to my request, she even added 'your highness' at the end, obviously mistaking me for Cadeth for a moment. I thought it cute, appreciating her accidental attempt at what I can only think of as extra kindness to help me feel better.

I looked around at the walls, trying to keep my breathing still, so it'd be easier for her to tighten. The only sound that could be heard, was the random creaks of the wooden floor.

As if unable to handle the silence any longer, Baba started to joke around.

"Ah your highness! The gossip has been great about you two!"

I chuckled, correcting her this time, "It's Selese Baba... and I'm happy you're happy." Baba chuckled back, then pulled the corset even tighter. I gasped.

She chirped back, "You're mated to the King your highness. If he heard me call you by your name he'd have my head. Only the Doctor can get away with that! That marking isn't just a pretty flower on your shoulder!" I jerked forward, but she pulled me back in, finishing up tying the corset.

"Wh-What?! Mated?!" Baba's tone took to that of singing as she responded.

"Yes of course your highness! Please don't tell me you didn't know marking makes you two mates! Why else would you need to sleep in the same bed!" I didn't even know I'd been marked... Is that why it hasn't gone away? Why is she giggling? How is this humorous?! I pressed my fingers against my forehead. Processing what I had just heard. Baba continued to tease.

"Your highness you look awfully confused. Alrighty then, so let me explain. Being mated to the King makes you a Que-"

"I need to see Cadeth now. Sorry. " Before Baba could say any more, I pulled away and opened the door. Then ran as fast as I could to the target range.

For the first time in my life, I'm quite sure my aura was red.
