Dr. Chibin must go to the library quite often as he seemed to know where everything was without even checking. Every few seconds he would look at me, then scan an area, pull out a book and either put it back or toss it on the ground. The first book he threw was a thin large paged hardcover. The second book much smaller in size but far thicker. Almost small enough to be able to fit in a bag or large pocket. Not like I had either currently. I did have my boots in the room but those would not be able to handle the thickness even if the size was right.
Once he got to the third book I stopped paying attention. There were far more enticing things nearby my current location. Which I've discovered is the children's section of this library. Many colorful books with various subjects, tales, and lore were scattered across the intricately designed shelves. Leaves and snakes carved throughout the deep navy blue wood. In fact the wood should have been my first indicator that this was the child's section. All the other bookshelves except for one in the corner(which was golden wood) were a dark brown or light green wood. Tracing my fingers on some of the thicker backed books, I stopped at one which was dirty. Coated slightly with what looked like dried blood.
Odd.
I pulled out the book. Not yet sure whether I would inspect further or just hand it over to Dr. Chibin for someone to clean. The book was on the older side, worn and faded in color, which may mean it'd be more delicate and cleaning might not be an option. I opened the cover to see the first page. The first page was a drawing, but more angled than regular artwork and not realistic in its style. Somewhat reminding me of manga art. Regardless, it was one of the strangest drawings I've ever seen.
It was a woman and man, but the woman had a tail like a wolf and a rainbow colored brace around her throat so tight that she was most definitely suffocating to some degree. Many of her veins were glowing making tangled lines throughout the design of her skin. Cuts everywhere dripping blood out on her clothes and around her. There were chains connected to the brace which wrapped around the man on the ground beside her. This man's eyes were open wide, yet his jaw was clenched shut. One of his hands reached out to her but she was holding onto her chest instead.
Obviously in pain.
They were atop a mountain filled with the same grass as outside, same color, same sharpness, same everything. Mind the piles of bodies of course. Everywhere on the mountain there were bodies, all types except wolves. Above them blades floated in the sky, suspended in what looked like water, and below them, below the mound, was more water. Though the water was like a tie dyed rainbow. In that water, was written in English and another language, what I assume must be the title of the book.
The Story of Kyns
I flipped the page to the next, but then before I could start reading I watched as two hands slammed the book shut. The book was ripped out of my grip. It was Dr. Chibin. I'd dazed out so much I hadn't even noticed him walking up to me.
His eye twitched as he gripped the book tightly. He gave me a half smile, half grimace. Then threw the book at a window. I ran out to try and stop it, but it was too late. It hit the glass then flopped forward onto the ground. I stopped and let a small breath release. Pleased that Dr. Chibin's overreaction didn't cause any problems.
Creak!
The glass shattered before my eyes, landing all over the book and floor surrounding the book.
"Don't touch the glass, it's not like Earth. You'll bleed non-stop if it cuts you. Unless I get a porusae stone out, and I really don't feel like it." I turned over and gave Dr. Chibin the most disdainful look I could muster. He had his flask out again, and took a large swig from it. I'm surprised it had any left after how much he'd drunken before we even got here.
"Might I know why you did that Dr. Chibin?" I questioned.
He chuckled, "That book is far too difficult for you. " I sighed. It was a child's book. The books he picked looked far more intimidating. As if knowing my focus was on those books, even if I was still staring at him in disbelief, he gathered them up and brought them to me. Handing them all at once. I held on to them tightly, already feeling my arms sting from the weight. He listed off the subject of each one.
"Atlas, culture, history, law, language. Read these first, then I'll give you more. Politics, more language, and how to not piss off the Doctor are next. " While he finished speaking a small smirk crept up along his lips. Getting more and more comfortable it seems, I returned a similar smirk.
Whispering out, "You're like the brother I never had Dr. Chibin."
"And your still the dumb Queen I never wanted. Woopdy doooo!" He then raised his hands up dramatically before dropping them back down again. I actually found it more funny than offensive. Is he being playful with me?
Dr. Chibin started heading toward the door leading out of the library. I'm assuming to leave me to my devices. Of course I shouldn't have expected him to want to help further. With each glance down at the books, I could feel the intimidation of such varied and difficult subjects--to even attempt to take in and comprehend--. It reminded me how foreign this whole place was to me. It was not earth and it would never be.
Before disappearing from sight, Dr. Chibin spoke once more.
"Get smarter quick. I don't have time to always waste with you like this." I responded fast as the words could be spoken.
"Of course. Thank you!" He slammed the door on his way out. I found a sitting area, and began reading. A little bit of everything.
Soon forgetting about the other book. The story of Kyns. Not even noticing 'til hours later, that it'd disappeared. Not really caring either.
I had other things to worry about.
