CLARY'S POV
"Come on Izzy, surely you can do better than this" I remark as Izzy narrowly misses my fist flying towards her face
"Shut up, Clary" Izzy laughed as she narrowly ducked my next punch before swerving around behind me to face my back. I heard the sizzle of Izzy's whip as it cracked into a long staff and smiled
"Huh, ok, maybe you're getting better" I rescind, focusing my concentration on the sound of Izzy's staff through the air as it whizzed through the air with the aim to hit my ribs. I spun quickly at just the right moment, catching the staff before it could hit me before then using it to pull Izzy forward, up and then down to the ground. I pinned Izzy to the floor with my boot and grinned.
"But maybe not good enough" I laugh as I stretched my arm out to help her up. As I do, I spot a familiar looking rune on her arm. It's kind of like an 'I' with small little crescent shapes coming off and through it. I knew I had seen it before, but just couldn't seem to place where I'd seen it. The only reason I had even noticed it, funnily enough, was because it was almost gone. It was faded to almost nothing, which, to my knowledge was strange for Izzy. After all, I had never seen a rune fade on Izzy since I'd known her.
"Hey, I think you need to redraw that rune Izzy" I say, pointing to the rune on Izzy's arm
"I-It's fine" Izzy said, frowning down at the rune. I frowned, also, still perplexed as to why I still couldn't seem to figure out what rune it was
"What rune is that, anyway? I know I've seen it before but I just can't place where, I think I'm having a hard time remembering them all" I laugh, brushing a lock of escapee hair behind my ear
"I think I need to be alone" Izzy whispered, hurriedly rushing from the room, leaving me alone and confused, wondering just what the story was behind that rune...
***
Later that day, I passed by the weapons room on my way to see Jace for a debriefing. Alec was there, carefully cleaning his arrows of demon blood
"Hey Alec" I call, crossing over to him. He replied with an unenthused hum. Not a very unusual response from him. Even since I'd arrived at the Institute, Alec had never been the friendliest person to me. Always grumpy and snappy and moody, but at least he somewhat acknowledged me...although that's probably completely down to Izzy and Jace's influence on him and their connection with me.
I moved slowly towards the sword rack, evaluating which sword I would need for my mission. Alec was barely a foot from me, changing from cleaning his arrows to sharpening them for the mission we would be going on later
"Hey, uh...do you know where we're headed tonight?" I ask, trying to strike up some form of conversation
"No" Alec replied minutely, beginning to pack his arrows into the holder, sharp and clean "Ask Jace, he's the one running the mission"
I nod, choosing not to tell him that that was what I had been going to do anyways, and moving over to the sword rack, having decided the sword I wanted...but, of course, it was on the top rack. I curse my stupid shortness, the sword was definitely way too high for her me reach
"Uh, Alec?" I called, he looked at me expectantly, "Could you give me a hand?"
I gestured to the sword on the top rack and Alec sighed, but obliged, picking the sword from the shelf with ease and handing it to me. But as he did, I noticed a rune on his arm and similar to Izzy's it was faded, almost completely gone, but it was a different rune. One I knew I'd never seen before. It was shaped almost like the letter C, an unfinished circle, and it had crescent moon shapes near the bottom with what looked like the letter W by the top. It was beautiful and strange and it definitely meant something, I was sure of it
