ALEC POV
It killed Alec to see her like this, shaking and writing and panting and sweaty. Thanks to the interim Head of Institute, Aldertree, Y/N had been given Yin Fen, a powerful vampire venom that eases the pain of serious injuries.
It was a dangerous remedy, a drug to Shadowhunter's not unlike that of heroin or cocaine for a mundane and Alec was livid, incensed that Aldertree had seen fit to give it to her just so she could go on a mission because she is one of the Institutes best Shadowhunter's.
Unfortunately, Y/N had grown an addiction to it, and no one had managed to catch onto it. Hell, they didn't even know she had been using it. As she usually did, she put too much trust into people who didn't deserve it and had kept it secret to ensure Aldertree was not punished for it.
But her addiction had grown too strong, to the point that she had seeked it out from the real thing, and that was when Alec had found out and intervened.
Alec walked carefully out of the bathroom, performing a balancing act with the bowl of what seemed to be water and the cloth in his hand, trying hard to keep it from spilling.
He set it down on the bed, her shaking and writing now reduced to shivers and spasms, before soaking the cloth in the liquid, a water-based potion that Magnus had made to help ease her endless suffering.
"It won't cure her, Alexander" he had said to Alec, "But it may help her deal with the withdrawal"
Everyone knew Yin Fen withdrawal was terrible, the pain suppressed by the venom coming back in a thick, crashing wave more intense then the pain had originally been. It was classic 'Up-Down' scenario as that was used to explain drug intake by mundanes.
She jerks harshly, her back arching up from the bed as the cold water hits her forehead but almost immediately so, she seems to shake a little bit less and Alec lets out a faint breath of relief, reminding himself to thank Magnus again later.
For a while, Alec just sits there, creating a continuous, repetitive pattern of re-submerging the cloth and putting it back to her forehead. She still had a very long journey of mending to go but the worst of it was mere hours from being over.
Soon, the bowl runs empty and Alec stand to retrieve more but a clammy, hot hand clambers for his, a panicked urgence behind the gesture.
"D-Don't leave...me" She manages to choke out between hammering teeth and body rocking shivers
"I'm not going anywhere, Y/N" Alec assures her, still resisting, "I just need to get more of the potion"
She tries to cling on to him tighter but the shivers racking her body coupled with the clamminess of her hand makes it like holding onto melting butter and her hand slips. She weakly tries to lift it back up, but a tiredness takes over her body and she can only manage to raise a finger as the third seizure wracks her body.
Used to it by now, she chatters out, "I d-don't want the p-p-potion"
"Y/N, you need it" Alec tries to reason, a pained expression on his face as he watches her squirm and write
"I d-don't w-want it" she reinforces, "It m-makes me f-f-feel worse"
Alec sighs before nodding and sitting beside you, taking her weak hand in his, your wedding ring glinting in the evening light. He brings her trembling hand to his lips and kisses the wedding ring gently before lowering it to his side.
She smiles softly as the seizure wears off and, finally, she reaches almost perfect stillness. She's still wobbly, still shaky and in no way fit enough to move but the worst, thankfully, is over.
"I hate seeing you like this" Alec admits, tears misting the edges of his eyes
"I-I k-k-know" she shivers, a sympathetic smile on her face, "B-But it was the s-s-same for me when you l-looked for Jace t-through the b-b-b-bond"
Alec grimaces slightly, remembering how painful it was for him and for her. She had been beyond distraught and she, in actual fact, had been the one to pull Alec back from going too far into the bond, from getting lost as Jocelyn Fray had warned him.
It was a terrible time for them both but it had reaffirmed their connection and not too long after that, they were engaged.
"I love you, Y/N" Alec begins and she smiles, "But I swear, if you ever think about..."
"A-Alec" she stops him, "I won't"
Finally, she begins to feel better and goes still. Not rigid, but normal. She still feels as if standing on a speaker, vibrations shivering her body but the violence of the shivers has receded to almost nothing. Now, the final battle was to be wagered from the inside.
"I love you so much, Mr Lightwood" she speaks clearly and affectionately and sits from the bed weakly
"Not nearly as much as I love you, Mrs Lightwood"
