Hurt and Comfort
"Thanks, Aunt Cass." Danika smiled, the older women placing a plate with a pastry on it and kissing the top of her hair.
"You're welcome, sweetie." Cass said, faking a smile. She could tell her niece wasn't fine, and that's what made her heart break. She looked at Tadashi and Hiro. "Would you two like anything?"
The two brothers shook their heads, more concerned for their sister than anything else. If there was one thing Tadashi could tell, it was when Danika was putting on a front. She was eating the pastry rather slowly, and her hands trembled every so often causing it to fall right back onto the porcelain.
"Something isn't right," Hiro whispered, making sure only Tadashi should hear. "Usually Aunt Cass's pastries make her feel better. She looks terrified."
Tadashi frowned a little when he saw his baby sister, and with a sigh he gestured for Hiro to follow him into the main room. Tadashi closed the door, knowing what needed to be discussed had to remain in private.
"Danika is in no state to talk about it right now." Tadashi said, sitting down on the couch. Hiro followed, feeling slightly nervous.
"What's going on, Tadashi?" he asked. Tadashi thought of a way to say his words, and steadied his breathing and nerves.
"There's a few things I never told you about the night Danika's parents were killed." he started. He felt a little bad, but in his eyes Hiro had a right to know. "When the burglars ransacked her house, it was a lot worse than what she told you. They were never brought to justice because...because..."
"Because what?" Hiro wondered. "Tadashi you're starting to scare me. What happened?"
"Danika told me she used her powers in self defense after they killed her parents." Tadashi confessed with a sigh. "They died by the time the police were on the scene, and she'd already left before they could question her. Eventually they planted the cause of their deaths on some faulty wiring in the kitchen, so Danika was left in the clear."
Hiro's pupils grew small at what he had heard. His best friend...his little sister...
Poor Danika, having to resort to something so awful. It was after receiving the new information that Hiro only pitied the lightning mutant more. Her parents had been ripped away from her at an age were she needed them the most, and at the same time her powers had gotten out of control to a level were lives had been taken.
"Bro...I had no idea." Hiro said softly, eyes glistening. "Why didn't she tell me any of this herself?"
"She was scared." Tadashi replied, he knew how much Danika hated bringing up the night of the burglary. It still hurt her, even now. "Scared she'd get judged or that people would abandon her. It wasn't her fault, Hiro. She didn't mean for it to happen."
"Of course not." Hiro understood, still a little shaken up but otherwise okay. "It was self defense. Those burglar could have done anything to her, I mean-"
"Please." Tadashi raised his hand, waving it dismissively. "I don't want to think about that. Trust me, I was pretty shaken up when Danika first told me. I feel bad for doing this to her but I felt like you had the right to now. I imagine she would have told you, but maybe it just slipped her mind."
"I guess so." Hiro folded his arms, sighing. "So uhh...has Morley text you about the whole lock down situation yet?"
"N-no, not yet. He probably will later on." Tadashi said, looking at his phone to find that there were indeed no texts from Morley. Abigail was sick so he was more than likely not going to see her until she was better. Due to her time in and exposure to the portal, her immune system had weakened and so it was easy for her to catch anything from a common cold to flu. Abigail Callaghan had her struggles in life, though she managed with Morley's help.
