An Assasin's Lament

"Whoa, man." White Rabbit said, calmly approaching Tadashi. "Calm down, okay? There's no need for any shouting. We just wanna know where Mandy is, that's all. You said she tried to kill you and your friend?"

"I'll ask the questions, snowman. First, what are you doing here, and second, what were you saying to my sister?" Tadashi furrowed his brows.

"That was just unnecessary." Blue Caterpillar folded his arms after hearing the insult. "Talk about rude."

"Shut up." Tadashi glared, his anger making him shake a little when he looked back at White Rabbit. "I'll ask you again. What are you doing here and what were you saying to my sister? If you've touched her you're dead. Understand me? Dead."

"Chill out, dude." Blue Caterpillar sighed, more annoyed than anything else. "That's not how we do things. Sure we're hired killers, but if there's one thing we're not, it's perverts. We don't take kindly to people like that. Your sister is a doll though. A very sweet young lady."

The caterpillar winked at Danika, watching her blush faintly. Tadashi cleared his throat so that the assassin's attention was on him.

"Heh, sorry."

You will be if you act like that in front of her again.

Tadashi was about ready to punch the guy in the face, who did he think he was? If he thought for a minute that he was going to have his way with Danika, he could think again.

White Rabbit face-palmed, he knew Jamie Phelps could be stupid at times, but not like this.

"Not cool, Blue. Not cool."

"So you're involved with that psycho? I should'a known she would have had backup with her. What is it you have against Evie, huh!? What has she ever done to you to deserve this!? Tracking her down, trying to murder her in her own home! You're sick in the head, all three of you!"

White Rabbit's and Blue Caterpillar's eyes widened, their blood running cold.

Oh. My. God. Amanda, what have you done?

Mandy...she lied to us. She said it was just a simple job...not this. She knows full well that personal vendettas aren't permitted by the program...she's gonna get herself sent to prison if she carries on with this! Everyone was right, she does enjoy killing, it's not just a way of making money for her. She actually...likes it. She was never my friend, or Kevin's.

"You really think we knew about this?" White Rabbit asked, still taking in the new information. "Pal, we're not involved in this little 'murder game' she's playing. This is the first we're hearing about it. You gotta believe us, this is not part of any job she's been assigned on. God, oh God..."

"Holy crap..." Tadashi could see the shock on the assassins' faces. "You guys are telling the truth, you didn't know about any of this. She's lied to you this whole time. I...i'm so sorry, I wish you didn't have to find out like this. Both of you. I am so, so sorry."

White Rabbit sat down in silence, his now cool cup of coffee waiting for him. He buried his face in his hands, sighing.

"Mandy...honey, why did you lie to us? We thought you were our friend, we thought we could trust you, damn it!"

Blue Caterpillar put his hand on his friend's shoulder. It all made sense now...Amanda Watson's true colours had been revealed. She was an insane, blood-thirsty killer out looking for revenge that was pointless.

"We have to stop her," he said, noting a new objective. "Before innocent people get hurt. Before this Evie girl gets hurt. If we can do that, then maybe we can convince her that this isn't the right path to go down. Trust me, I've been there. I used to be a military sniper, and eventually, it all became too much. I have PTSD because of it, and the only reason I joined the program was to earn money for my wife and unborn kid."

"Program?" Danika asked, pouring some coffee for herself. "What program?"

Blue Caterpillar looked at White Rabbit, who gave a simple nod of approval. "This information is usually classified, so you can't tell anyone else. We work for a government-run organisation called T.A.P, otherwise known as The ALICE Program. As you can probably tell by the name, each assassin is named after a character from Alice in Wonderland, depending on their physical skills and abilities. I'm known as Blue Caterpillar because I can transform myself into any type of person. You want someone who's a huge nerd? I can be that guy. A seductive, suit-wearing bachelor? You name it. Kevin here is known as White Rabbit, and no, it's not because he's an albino. He's fast on his feet, just like a rabbit. And because he's late most of the time."

White Rabbit growls when he hears his friend's comment. "Watch your mouth, Jamie."

"Sorry, I meant sometimes he's late."

"So wait, your real names are Kevin and Jamie?" Danika questioned. She was slightly hurt that she had been lied to by two handsome gentlemen but she could understand their reason why. "Kevin and Jamie what?"

"I'm Jamie Phelps." Blue Caterpillar introduced himself by his actual name. "My sulking friend here is Kevin Farringway. Though we'd prefer it if you could call us by our working titles- standard procedure, you see."

"Sure." Tadashi agreed, he could go along with that. "I know you said we can't tell anyone what you just told us, but my friends are gonna need to know. We work as a team, we don't keep secrets from one another."

"It's kind of our thing," Danika added, drinking her coffee. "A little like an oath. We don't keep secrets and we don't lie. Mutant code."

White Rabbit gave a consenting nod. "That's fine. The more help, the better." he scratches at his light sideburns with a light chuckle. "To be honest I didn't think I'd ever meet a mutant, let alone two. I guess all your friends are mutants too?"

"Some of us are, some aren't. We don't let that get in the way though." Danika smiled softly. "Friends are friends no matter what."

"I think i'm gonna like you." Blue Caterpillar gave her a grin, playfully punching her arm. "Kev, maybe we should adopt her? You know, train her to be one of us?"

"What!?" Tadashi's eyes widened, how dare someone suggest such an idea! Taking his precious sibling away from him was out of the question! "No! You're not taking my baby sister from me!"

"Cool down, man. He jokes like this all the time," White Rabbit assured him, staring blankly at his cup of coffee. "The guy hasn't stopped acting like a broody goofball ever since he found out his wife was pregnant. You may wanna start getting used to it because we are gonna be seeing you around much more often now that we know all about Mandy's intentions. We're in this together, buddy, no buts."

"What makes you think we're gonna work with hired killers?" Tadashi folded his arms after calming down. "You know, if my aunt were here she'd kick you right out that door. People in the city don't take too kindly to assassins, the government hasn't had to use them in years. But I guess, like always, they're sneaky in what they say to the public. Keep out all the good details."

"The program was started as a way to help those who had lost their jobs in the armed forces find some sense of normality. Like we said before, Jamie is an ex-military sniper. I, on the other hand, used to be a bodyguard for famous people." White Rabbit said, violet-reddish eyes staring vacantly into the drink. "I'm not too sure about who Mandy used to be before she joined the program. We were asked to look after her when she first arrived, and originally it was just one of those deals. We were work partners, nothing more. Until she told me more and more about herself that I couldn't help but feel sorry for her. I think you'll find she's not as bad as you think."

"Are you forgetting the part were she tried to kill my brother and his friend?" Danika furrowed her brows. "Saying that she's not as bad as we think is like saying you approve of what she did."

"I'm not saying that at all." White Rabbit shook his head. "All i'm saying is that there are two sides to every story. To understand those sides, you gotta do one thing."

"Find out why they are the way they are." Blue Caterpillar chimed in, knowing it was the only thing that could be done.
