Pills
Evie organised all her books and folders into an organised pile, feeling proud of herself for her hard work as she was now finally settled in her lab. Everything was in its a place, and a few belongings that she had brought from home resided on the desk, a most notable one being a framed photo of her grandparents when they were in their youth. It reminded her that they were young at some point or another, and that they had lived their lives to the full. She missed them, but she was happy that they had the chance to be together when they passed, their love was something special.
"It's finally happening," she picked up the frame, her fingers tracing delicately on the old fashioned photograph; she wasn't going to allow herself to damage it. "I know you've always wanted what's best for me, and now I feel like this is the right path. You might not be here anymore, but that doesn't mean you're not in here, right?" she placed her hand on her heart. It made her feel better knowing that they would be by her side in spirit.
Her grandparents were the only people she had. She didn't know her mother or father as she was told they left her with her grandma and grandpa when she was just a baby. It was a rough start for someone so young, but her grandparents didn't make her feel any less than other children, and when she would ask about their love for her, they would always tell her the same thing they always did.
'We love you all the way to the moon and stars, sweet pea.'
Sweet Pea. It was as sweet as it sounded. Anyone could raise a child as far as she was concerned, it didn't matter whether or not they were related by blood. She'd heard plenty of stories of grandparents adopting their grandchildren or aunts and uncles adopting their nieces or nephews. Family was family at the end of the day, and as they were treated with respect, it was all that mattered.
"I hope he's okay. He looked so tired during that last class, like he hadn't had sleep in days. Poor thing."
Reaching into her bag, Evie took out a bottle of pills as it was time for her to take her medication. She was able to swallow them without the use of water, and it would only take a matter of minutes before they had the chance to kick in. Taking pills without water had been a notable trait of hers, and it was thought she had developed the ability from her grandfather as he would take medication the same way.
Evie read the bottle, it was labelled with: "Olanzapine: Take twice a day. Never exceed the recommended amount."
It was a powerful drug, but not powerful enough to block the voices in her head permanently. Two, three, four or five wouldn't be enough, not even six. But sometimes she had wondered what it would have been like if she wasn't around, maybe she'd be happier in death than she was in life.
She sighed, pushing the closed plastic bottle away from her. Her hair fell from the pins she used to keep it up, but she didn't care. She was met with the cool surface of the desk as it touched her cheek, and with a tiny pout of boredom she thought of what she could do to kill some time while she waited for her next class to start. College life was surprisingly not as bad as she thought it would be.
"Bored already, dingbat? Tch, I should have thought so. College life not everything it's cracked up to be?"
"I'm not in the mood for this right now, Wave. I've taken my medication and you'll be gone once it kicks in."
"If it kicks in you mean. You know, those pills sure do look like candy, don't they? I wonder what would happen if you take a whole handful of them? I think it'd be fun to find out."
"I'd have an overdose, and i'm not going to go over the amount I need. The doctor said I only have to take them twice a day, and that's what I intend to do. Now go away."
It was a relief on Evie's shoulders when she no longer felt the mental conflict that had been going on in her mind for so long. Even though the effects were only temporary, it was still worth it. She wouldn't have to put up with Wave for a good few hours.
Onlanzapine, a drug that handled the voices just fine but didn't handle its taker. The pills would leave side effects, causing Evie to become somewhat irritable and sleepy. In all fairness, she hated taking the medication, but if it helped her, then she wasn't too bothered about what effects it had afterwards.
"I never wanted this to happen. Five years ago, I was just a normal sixteen year old who had a normal life...well, a fairly normal life. But then that had to happen, I got taken away to that place...and since then it's been so difficult for me to trust even the nicest of people. I was distant from my own grandparents after the whole experience, perhaps I was the one responsible for them dying. They might have died out of sorrow. It's all my fault."
"Of course it's your fault, idiot, what did you expect? Did you expect them to just drop dead like that? No, that's not how it works. You're the one who caused their deaths; it wasn't 'sickness' or 'natural causes'. It's all your fault, Evie. It's your fault."
"Shut up! Just shut up!" Evie screamed, picking up her binder that was filled with sheets of paper and coursework and threw it at the 'imaginary' figure. Only for Wave to vanish out of sight and the binder to hit the wall, all of its contents falling onto the floor. Slowly, Evie got to her knees so that she could put everything back in its appropriate place, though it was only then that the tears began to form.
"N-no, don't-"
She burst into tears; constant whispers making her spine shiver.
'You're never gonna be good enough!'
'You should have just died when you had the chance!'
'Can't you see that nobody loves you?! Not even your precious grandparents cared about you! You were just the waste of space that was left on their doorstep as a baby!'
'Leave her alone, Wave! Can't you see she's hurting?!'
'Can't you see that I don't care! This little brat needs to be taught a lesson, and if no one else is gonna teach her it, then I will! She needs to learn the hard way, don't you remember what she used to be!?'
'You mean who she used to be? She's not that person anymore! The girl I see is someone who wants to share her ideas with the world, she's smart and amazing in everything she does! She doesn't need a constant voice like you putting her down all the time? What did she ever do to you?!'
"Please, just be quiet!" Evie sobbed. "The both of you, just be quiet. Leave me alone, I can't handle this right now."
'You've never been able to handle it, dingbat. The sooner you learn to accept that i'm a part of you, the better. I'm not going away anytime soon, and neither is Little Miss Prim and Proper.'
'Shut your mouth right now, Wave! What do I have to do with this?! You know i"ve always been here to support Evie, I care about her and she cares about me!'
"JUST GIVE IT A REST ALREADY!' Evie snapped, water coming out of the palm of her hand and hitting a person who had just walked into her lab. She gasped, covering her mouth in shock and what she had just done.
"Oh no," she said, feeling guilty. "I'm so sorry; I didn't mean to do that. Here, let me get you something to dry yourself with, I think I have something in my bag that might be able to help."
"Don't worry about it. I'm a fire mutant, remember?"
With a click of his fingers, Tadashi was able to dry himself using the power of fire. There was a tingle of warmth, and he was pleased that his clothes no longer stuck to his body. He ran his hand through his hair, ruffling it a little to give it the vibe he had become accustomed to.
"Are you okay? I heard you shouting from my lab."
