Mutant Club
School had ended for the day, and people were leaving to go and tell their families about their days, to spend time with the people they loved before starting the whole routine again.
Meanwhile, Tadashi and the rest of the mutant and nerd gang walked through the doors of a smaller building that was next to SFIT. It was known simply as "Mutant Club".
Mutant Club was a place for members of the mutant community to hang out and just have fun with their powers, though it was also a place for Mutant enthusiasts to learn about the genetically modified through seeing powers of the gifted with their own eyes.
"Hey guys!" Morley greeted, Abigail was already in a conversation with one of her many students. "I'm glad you could make it!"
"Why would we ever miss Mutant Club, dude?" Ted smiled, spotting one of his friends in the distant before going to greet her. "Hey, Sal! How's it hangin', dudette?"
"Ted, my man!" Sal and Ted shared a bro hug, laughing at the pleasure of each other's company. Sal wasn't the most feminine of ladies, her masculine side proved to be much more dominant. At first, many thought Sal was a guy to begin with, but with the simple sound of her 'in-the-middle' voice, she was able to prove she was indeed female.
"Great to see you, Sal." Tadashi smiled, he hoped that Evie had taken the opportunity to come to the club, he had a feeling she would enjoy it. When he didn't spot her, he figured she might have gone home. It was as if he had completely forgotten that it was her first day, part of him felt like he had seen her somewhere before. Perhaps he had, she was a victim of T.E.P just like he had been after all.
Evie had trouble finding her way in between crowds of friends who were conversing and holding cans of their favourite fizzy drinks. It was unlike anything she had ever seen before, there was nothing like what she was seeing back in Canada, she was completely in awe and wanted to see more of it.
"Having trouble finding your way, Evie?" a familiar voice briefly startled her, but as soon as she caught sight of Morley, it made her feel better.
"Oh, hello- umm...I'm guessing I should call you Mr Callaghan?"
"Just call me Morley; I don't like formalities all that much." Morley smiled. Evie admired the unusual name; she'd heard it as a surname before but never as a first. "How are you settling in?"
Evie ran her fingers through her hair nervously, unsure of how to go about the question at first. She never used to be so nervous, but as the years went by she found herself becoming more and more hesitant when engaging in a conversation.
"G-good, I suppose." she said, feeling herself slightly trembling. "It's a new school, new country...it's gonna take a while to get used to."
"I understand, it's not easy. You'll get there eventually, i'm sure of it." Morley spoke reassuringly, his tone managing to make Evie give a little smile. "Why don't you go look around? I'm sure there's a lot of people who can't wait to meet you. People here love showing off their powers."
"They do? Oh, i'm not really the kind of person to show off my powers, I don't like bringing too much attention to myself. I have nothing against anyone or anything; it's just the way I am."
Morley smiled with understanding; he liked making people feel better about a situation.
'What a nice man. I gotta admit, he's kind of cute but not really the kind of guy I would go for. Red hair isn't a favourite of mine, but I think it suits him. Red and curly, it makes him the person that he is.'
Saying goodbye, Evie went to explore the club more, accidently bumping into a few fellow mutants as she did. With quick apologies, she sighed with relief when she found a spot that wasn't crowded with people.
"Okay, you're okay. Phew."
'Maybe I should have waited before coming here; I don't know many people here and...In don't know, I think i'll go home. I'm so tried, and it's not like today has been an easy one.'
Evie prepared to leave, but was stopped as she accidently bumped into a familiar face, who of which simply smiled down at her.
"Evie! Hey, how's it goin'? I didn't think you'd be here!"
Ted was holding a red plastic cup filled with soda, a grin on his face as he greeted Evie. Evie timidly waved to the taller man, his height made her feel a little self conscious. He was like a giant compared to her!
"Come on, you've gotta come check this out! Hey, Dash! Show her the thing! The thing!"
"Wait you mean that thing? Oh, yeah, now you're talking, man! Prepare to be amazed!"
Focusing his mind onto the one thing he could control best, a rope made completely of fire emerged from Tadashi's palm, latching onto some empty cans of soda and pulling them to the floor. Hiro cheered for his older brother, applauding his trick.
"Not bad, bro, not bad at all. Oh, hey, Evie! When did you get here?"
"Just a few minutes ago, actually." Evie smiled. "So, this is what you do when you're not working on projects?"
"Yep." Danika said, picking up the cans her brother had pulled to the floor and putting them in a nearby trash bag. "We're not all students here though. The three nerds over there are planning to get into an art school, Aspen works in a boutique. The rest of us spend most of our time studying here at school and the club."
"So anyone's allowed to join? Hmm, that sounds nice."
"Only a few people are allowed to join, which includes mutants, mutant enthusiasts and those who've got good grades. All the other kids, they don't get all the privileges we do." Honey Lemon explained, she couldn't help get a picture of Evie in her fifties themed attire. Evie didn't know what to make of the situation, but decided not to say anything.
"Do you have to get pictures of every person who wears cool fashion?" Go Go asked.
"It's for research." Honey Lemon smiled proudly, putting her phone back in her bag. "I love the bow in your hair, it's so pretty!"
"Thanks, I guess." Evie said, quiet in her tone. "I'm sorry, i've really gotta go, this isn't my kind of thing. See you later!"
She was quick to rush out; even in high heels she could run pretty fast.
"Darn..."
"She can run fast in high heels..."
"Sweet."
"Totally." Fred, Ted and Zach said, fistbumping each other.
"I swear those three ate space cakes before we came here." Tadashi said to himself. "They say a lot of things in sync, but I guess that's them just being, well- them."
Tadashi looked down at his watch, there were still a few hours before Cass would expect him and his three siblings to be home. He didn't like staying out late, especially not after the things he had witnessed years ago. He got a cup of soda, drinking it all in one single gulp.
"Huh, guess I was pretty thirsty. I'm gonna go have some alone time."
Making his way out into the gardens, he found himself standing on the same bridge he and Hiro had stood on all those years ago. Memories came flooding back to him, and he couldn't help but stumble backwards slightly with a gasp.
'No...no, I can't think about that. Focus...focus..."
Tadashi took a breath, but not even that helped him with his worries. He could still hear the screams in his ears, the screams he made when chemical liquid sizzled on his skin like hot oil. Even in the present day, that feeling never leaved him be.
"Stop it! Come on! Snap out of it!"
He slapped himself twice on each cheek, his fingernails digging into the wood of the bridge and his eyes glowing a fury filled red. Why, why did it have to happen to him of all people? What had he ever done to deserve something so cruel? Nothing was crueller than memory, and they were memories he would thrown bleach on if he could.
But no, he was stuck in an endless cycle of fear and sadness, and none of that would ever leave what was now a broken mind.
